Who am I?
A bit of information about me
Hi dear reader! My name is Ine and I am a 23 year old girl living in Belgium.
As a lot of artists will tell you when you ask them how they got started, they will say they have been drawing since they could hold a pencil. And really, it's the same for me. Of course when I was a child it was only a hobby, something to keep me busy from time to time. It hasn't been since I was 16 that I started drawing more and more, and started to think of pursuing a "career" in art in my future.
And that future is now. Sort of. I first spent 2 and a half years studying Animation, but found out that it really wasn't what I wanted to do. So I quit that course and started from scratch in a different school, this time in Graphic Design.
At the moment, I am at the end of my second year out of four. After four years I should hopefully have my Master's Degree. However next year I won't be doing any Graphic Design anymore (which was still compulsory this year), but will be focusing on Illustration, my big passion.
My goal for the future is to become a children's book illustrator, and I hope to be able to make my living by following this dream. It will be a difficult goal to reach, but I will do anything I can to get there. =)
Examples of my work
This is the famous sequence in Lewis Caroll's "Alice in Wonderland", where Alice meets Mister Caterpillar. Done with oil pastels on cardboard.

A girl hugging her pet bunny. Since everyone deserves hugs. Again, made with oil pastel on cardboard.

Didn't we all love to run through the rain and mud as kids? This is a drawing to remember those days when we didn't have too worry yet about all the things that haunt us as adults.
Made with sepia ink, texture in the background added in Photoshop.

Mmm, who doesn't like a cupcake? And who wouldn't want to have a giant one to eat? I know I wouldn't object!
This image was made with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

A very simple design of a cute bee, since less is more. Works very well on a T-shirt.
Image made with Adobe Illustrator.

Of course this is only a very small selection of my work. In my galleries, which are linked below, you can find a lot more illustrations and designs.
Materials
What I use to work with
- One of the most basic materials to work with is something everybody knows about: the pencil.

It's a normal graphite pencil, which gives you grey lines on paper. However, not every pencil is good enough to draw with. There is the difference between hard and soft pencils.
Soft ones range between 9B and B, there's two medium ones (HB and F), and the hard ones range between H up to 9H.
Soft pencils don't require a lot of pressure from the user; they leave their colour on the paper very easily. Hard ones on the other hand, require more pressure. The higher the number, the more you need to press (for hard ones) or the more easily it'll give off colour (for the soft ones).
This is a big range of pencils, but it is possible to only use a couple. I myself use the HB one to do my first sketch with, and anything ranging between 4B and B for a more finished look. If you're primarily a pencil artist though, and wish to apply a big range of shading, then it wouldn't hurt to buy a bigger set of pencils (they can often be bought in sets). - Next on my list are coloured pencils.

Coloured pencils are a pretty easy medium to work with, but they can be quite hard to master.
Coloured pencils are available in pretty much any supermarket, but remember that the quality of those might not be that great. Instead it is best to go to an art store and ask them for a good brand (which might differ from country to country).
Good coloured pencils should allow you to "layer" them on top of each other quite easily. Meaning you can start out with a light base colour and then add darker colours on top, creating more depth and making your image look a lot more vivid.
Try to experiment with them, colouring in circles (which usually gives a smoother look if done right) or in straight lines, constantly following the same direction. Try mixing different colours on top of each other to create a nice new colour. There are lots of possibilities when using coloured pencils. - This list will be further updated soon with such materials as: oil pastels, watercolours, ink and acrylics!

Saw you on GCU, I am also on RB:) I think your illustrations are beautiful, you have a lot of talent, and I have to tell you, you are living my dream! When I was a little girl in England, (I'm now in Canada), I wanted to be an illustrator of children's books, but it wasn't meant to be. I still live in hope though....you are inspiring me!
All the best, Avis
