VERY UNIQUE FROG INFORMATION

This lens was created in honor of one of my favorite animals, the frog! I love everything about frogs and I will love to share some interesting information about them. Enjoy and let me know what you think.

FROGS LIFE CYCLE

1. The male frog fertilizes the eggs during the
amplexus position.

2. The fertilized eggs starts to look like a
tadpole. They get longer and start moving in it's
egg.

3. In about 21 days after fertilization, it will
hatch.

4. By this stage the tadpoles are very fragile. They
will stick themselves to floating weeds.

5. The tadpoles starts with tiny legs and they body
elongates. In about 6-9 weeks, they start eating
dead insects and plants. The arms comes out,
elbows first. They look like tiny grogs with long
tails.

FROGS VS. PREDATORS

Frogs like any other type of animals, have to protect themselves from predators. There are different kinds of predators like:

*Snakes
*Lizards
*Birds
*Bats

Frogs comes with a natural way to protect themselves. One of the ways is the poisonous pockets called paratoid glands. The paratoid glands are located behind the ear.

Another way the can protect themselves is by camouflage. Most of them blend in with the background to distract and confuse the predator. There are some type of frogs, like Phrynohyas venulosa and Hyla avivoca. They both blend in very well with the environment.

Other frogs have bright color. These are the poisonous frogs. They have a bright color letting their predators know that they are deadly. Showing bright colors is a sign of danger.

For example:

Dendrobates azureus:The blue poison dart frog is a colorful frog found in the rainforests of Suriname, a country located in the northeastern part of South America. The blue poison dart frog uses its colors to warn predators of its toxic skin. If an animal eats the blue poison dart frog it will become very sick.

Blue poison dart frogs are poisonous due to their diet. They eat ants and other small insects that have toxins chemicals in their bodies. The frogs can eat these insects without getting sick.

THE RED EYED TREE FROG

Agalychnis calidryas: The Red-eyed Tree Frog is a nocturnal carnivore, meaning it is active at night. During the day, it sleeps and has its eyes covered, its green body color blending nicely with tree leaves.

When disturbed, it opens its huge red eyes and flashes its blue and yellow side body and leg colors. This defense technique is called startle coloration and together with the red eyes could shock the predator for a split second or two - just enough time for the frog to leap to safety.

This tree dwelling red eyed tree frog (agalychnis calidryas) is a vividly colorful species living in the lowlands of the Amazon rainforests of South and Central America near river inlets and lakes. They have has been spotted in the southern jungles of Mexico as well.

FROGS INVADING YOUR GARDEN...

What to Do??

I know! It's horrible to have your beautiful garden infested with toads or frogs. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the little fellows, but I want my garden with no frogs. If you have pets, you know what I mean.

Many accidents and even death has occurred with dogs getting very ill because the mouthed a toad or a frog. You want to keep your pet and family members safe. Remember, that frogs have poisonous glands!!

*Hint: Frogs eats insects, slugs and snails, so you might want to think about that!

The first thing you need to do is to clear out any accumulation of water and maintain the area dry. Frogs are attracted to moister.

Don't accumulate pieces of wood or debris. The frogs love to hide during the day and come out at night.

Eliminate their source of food: insects!! Try using pesticides are commonly used to eliminate insects.
