Tips for Photographing Your Baby or Toddler
Capturing Memories of Your Little Cherub
- Try to take your photographs in the morning or afternoon as noon lighting is not as flattering as other times of the day.
- Use a flash if the lighting is not that bright or you are indoors (even if the lighting is good).
- Use a flash if your hands are not that steady. On an automatic camera the shutter needs to open for longer without the flash (unless the lighting is very bright) leaving more time for hand-shake to affect the image.
- Take multiple shots at a time. Some cameras allow for rapid fire shooting by holding down the button. This is the best way to capture those magical poses where if you go for a single shot you might miss the smile or catch the shot as a head turns or eyes blink.
- Get down to your child's level occasionally. You don't want all your shots to be taken with your child looking up at you.
- Don't forget to allow some photos of you with your child. You might hate them now, but you'll love having them in a few years' time. Just put on your best smile, get into the moment, and put the camera out of your mind.

Costumes on Babies?
We know children love to dress up, but what do babies think about the idea? If they're not old enough to protest, should we inflict costumes on them? Or do we have a duty to create the ultimate in embarrassing photos for our kids' 21st birthday feature?
