With the advent of the first telephone, the world was changed. People were able to communicate more frequently, as well as stay closer to family and friends. As technology has changed so have the pricing of our beloved phone companies. I will discuss some items in this lens that could help in changing your phone service as well as cutting costs.

Evaluating the Cost
Is It Worth It?
I have had the pleasure and good fortune to have been able to work in the telecommunications industry for 25+ years. My background has been in the "Plain Old Telephone" (POTS) side of the house. In my years of working with the phone company, I have been involved with upgrading from the electromechanical equipment to Digital Switching systems. With these newer switches brought "New Features".1.Call waiting
2.Caller ID
3.Speed Dialing
4.3Way Conference calling
5.Call Blocking
Etc....and so on and so forth.
Problem...........You get charged for each individual feature or they are packaged together in seperate bundles, which might not have the ones you would like.
So there goes the cost, up! up! up!
In our current times we have options with VOIP companies such as:
Vonage
Packet 8
Sun Rocket
Skype
Just a few to mention. These options offer anywhere from Free PC to PC calling to unlimited plans. With these options the user needs a broadband connection with a phone adapter to utilize these opportunities. With the PC to PC calling, you also need a computer to utilize this as well.
We also have Cell Phones, of which many people elect to utilize as their primary means of communications. Some of the more used companies are:
Cellphone Companies
Verizon Wireless
ATT (fCingular)
Alltel (Bought by Verizon)
Sprint/Nextel
as well as others in regional areas of the United States and globally. In our present time, there are many good plans to fit just about everyones needs. The draw back to cell phones only is with rural customers. Unlike the metropolitan areas, the rural customer doesn't have the saturated coverage of cell towers which might limit the ability to use the cell phone as the primary communications device.
As with anything in live, the person must decide for themselves what best fits their situation with the available resources at hand.
