Why You Shouldnt DeClaw A Cat

I have 2 cats whom I love dearly, one loves to scratch her nails on my furniture and one likes to claw into the carpet. They both use different materials as scratching posts but it results in one big disaster. I know that some of you might have some really nice furniture that you want to protect and the last thing you need is for your cat to tear it apart. I know that some people have or will consider declawing their cat but it is a very painful process for the cat and takes away their natural defenses. Declawing a cat is like having your fingers removed right down to the knuckle. How would you like that? Please consider other alternatives before disabling your cat in this manner. Here are some things you can consider.

Cat's Claws

First off you should know how cat's claws work. Cat's claws are used when they stretch. They stretch their muscles while digging into a surface for support. They also walk on their claws which is part of their support. The cat''s claws are not the same as human fingernail it is part of their bones. When you de-claw a cat, not only are you taking away their nails but basically amputating beyond the claws to their bones, ligaments and tendons. THIS IS AN AMPUTATION don't let these vets fool you in to thinking it is just a simple claw removal.

Declawing Complications

When you declaw your cat, there are some complications that can occur. You cat may go through excruciating pain and can suffer nerve damage, hemorrhage, have problems healing and suffer from chronic back and joint pain. Since our animals cannot talk to us, we do not realize how much damage we can be doing to their bodies. When we are in pain we can express this to a doctor, if we had an amputation or knew that we were getting an amputation for no particular reason we would be furious. Please remember that you cat needs their claws to jump, stretch, climb trees, scratch their litter box, and fend off invaders. Please do your research before putting your precious animal through this very painful and agonizing procedure.

Did You Know That Some Countries Will Not Declaw Cats

Did you Know that Declawing Cats in some countries are considered illegal or inhumane and will not be performed unless under extreme circumstances only.
England, Austria, Ireland, Brazil, Scotland, Switzerland, Denmark. Australia, Wales, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Italy, Sweden, Slovenia, Yugoslavia, France, Netherlands, Portugal, Malta, Germany, North Ireland, Belgium , Israel, and Bosnia do not practice the procedure of declawing cats.

Alternatives to Declawing

Have you tried to cut your cats claws before? You could take your cat to professional if you are uncomfortable doing it yourself. It usually does not cost more than $10 . If you try to cut your cats claws on your own you have to be careful to not take off to much as you might hit the nerve and cause more damage as well as bleeding.
