Constant Velocity Joints

A constant velocity joint or a CV Joint, as it is popularly called, is primarily used in front wheel drive and all wheel drive cars. True to its name, a CV joint maintains a constant velocity when it rotates. The CV joints are attached to each end of a drive shaft. One will find CV joints in all front-wheel drive cars. Many rear and four-wheel drive cars and trucks feature CV joints as well. The CV joint is packed with grease and is protected by a rubber or plastic boot. CV joints do not normally require any maintenance and are supposed to last for a very long period of time provided their protective boot does not get damaged.

Types of CV Joints

The two most commonly used types of CV joints are the ball-type and tripod-type. Different variations of ball-type CV joints are commonly used on the outer side of the drive shaft, while tripod-type CV joints are mostly used on the inner side. CV joints are different from "Hooke" joints as the CV joints have several grooves containing balls. As such, when the shaft rotates, there is no change in speed between the input and output.

Problems of CV Joints

The most common problem that ails CV joints is damage to their protective boot. Once this happens, the grease comes out allowing the moisture and dirt to get in, which eventually leads to the failure of CV joints due to lack of lubrication and corrosion. Ignoring a damaged boot can lead to a situation where the CV joints or the whole shaft will need replacement. As such, it is recommended to get the protective boot of CV joints checked during every routine car service so as to ensure best performance. If a damaged boot is noticed early, simply replacing it with fresh grease may fix the problem and the CV joints may still be able to function properly.
