Cyber Identity Theft Is One Of Today's Major Concerns

Today's biggest cyber security concern is cyber identity theft. Cyber thieves use many different tricks. Hacking, use of spyware and phishing are used to gain personnel information from their victims.
In phishing for example, the thief sends an innocent looking e-mail with the title of a respected site, usually a financial institution. This e-mail would state that their is a problem with the account and provide a link to resolve the situation. Once the link has been clicked and the unsuspecting person is on their site they will try to obtain personal information such as credit card or social security number.

Cyber Identity Theft

The web is a powerful tool, in the old days a person would have to visit a library to do most research or locate information about a specific topic. With a computer and the net now in homes that information is now just a click away.

The internet can also be a very dangerous thing. Viruses can be mass produced and spread around the world, especially to countries that lack computer security. It can be used to gain access to banking knowledge taking money from the owner. It can be a source of activity that is not appropriate for young people such as pornography, lewd acts, cursing and crime.

The internet is not a good place for children to be nosing around in. It is a great idea for parents to teach their children about the dangers of the internet. A child that happens upon a website that is not appropriate may have their life's changed forever.

By teaching children properly you are ensuring the safety of the entire family as well as their own. Any information that a child shares over the internet can endanger the entire family. Teach your children never to give out personal information, even it is just a location, a phone number, or even a name.

Teach your children never to give out passwords to anyone, even close friends. Having a password makes it much easier for criminals to get what they want without the risk of getting caught. A close friend might have a slip of the tongue and give out the password to the wrong person.

Cursing and other rude behavior should not be permitted over the internet. Obviously anything that is put out on the internet is out there forever. You never know if the person that the ill feelings are directed at may be a computer whiz, and you may become the object of ill will which could endanger your computer and data.

Allow your children to have fun at the same time restricting them. Allowing them to have total freedom on the internet will usually result in trouble as they are mostly innocent and unsuspecting of those who seek to prey on children.

Place security restrictions on the internet browser. The computer should be placed in the family room or some other common area, but not in the child's private room. You will need to check in on the child from time to time, for their own protection.

New Wikipedia

Identity theft is a term used that is to refer to fraud that involves someone pretending to be someone else in order to steal money or get other benefits. The term dates to 1964 http://dictionary.oed.com/cgi/entry/50111220/50111220se23 OED Online. September 2007. Oxford University Press.and is actually a misnomer, since it is not inherently possible to steal an identity, only to use it. The person whose identity is used can suffer various consequences when he or she is held responsible for the perpetrator's actions. In many countries specific laws make it a crime to use another person's identity for personal gain.

Identity theft is somewhat different from identity fraud. However, the terms are often used interchangeably. Identity fraud is the result of identity theft. Someone can steal or appropriate someone's identifying information without actually committing identity fraud. The best example of this is when a data breach occurs. There has been very little evidence to link ID fraud to data breaches. A Government Accountability Office study determined that "most breaches have not resulted in detected incidents of identity theft".http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d07737.pdf However the title of that report is "Data Breaches Are Frequent, but Evidence of Resulting Identity Theft Is Limited; However, the Full Extent Is Unknown". A later study by Carnegie Mellon University concluded that "the probability of becoming a victim to identity theft as a result of a data breach is ...around only 2%".http://www.heinz.cmu.edu/research/241full.pdf More recently, one of the largest data breaches ever, accounting for over four million records, resulted in only about 1800 instances of identity theft, according to the company whose systems were breached.http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/story.php?id=256153 However, synthetic ID theft is not always detectable by the consumers whose information was used, according to an FTC report.Federal Trade Commission ? 2006 Identity Theft Survey Report, p.4
