Differences and Commons
An abbreviation originated from Latin word brevis, meaning "short". It's a shortened form of a word or phrase. Usually, but not as a rule, it consists of a letter or group of letters taken from the word or phrase.Acronyms and initialisms are abbreviations that are formed using the initial components in a phrase or name. These components may be individual letters (as in FAQ) or parts of words (as in Interpol). Acronyms are used in moder English but also in other languages. Usually, acronyms are regarded as a subgroup of abbreviations.

Additional Learning Resources:
- Abbreviation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- Abbreviation has been used as long as phonetic script existed, in some senses actually being more common in early literacy, where spelling out a whole word was often avoided, initial letters commonly being used to represent words in specific application. By classical Greece and Rome, the reduction of words to single letters was still normal, but no longer the default.
- Acronym and initialism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- While the word abbreviation refers to any shortened form of a word or a phrase, some have used initialism or alphabetism to refer to an abbreviation formed simply from, and used simply as, a string of initials.

Acronyms are now so much a part of Internet and online chatting culture that it's hard to imagine either without. The ones I use most are LOL, ROFL, and AFAIK...And I know what you mean if you say, MTFBWY (May the Force be with you!). Cheers!

Yes, I use them all the time and on the odd occasional I write a real letter, I have to make a conscious effort not to use them then too.

I had to learn these the hard way.....asking :) But it does make things so much faster....especially like the LOL :)

No! Hate them! Hidious slang!
mysticmama says:
I do use them, but I really don't care for them...I think that this type of "lingo" is just another aspect of the dumbing down of the human race... and rots the brain just like television & fast food...There is a movie called Idiocracy where the World's population just gets dumber & dumber...from it's continued love affair with instant gratification...It's suposed to be a comedy...but I find it more of a horror movie...since it seems to be where humans are headed.

I like to be different so am joining this side. Being deaf I need this type of thing to help with making things easier. However LOL really winds me up. I am so sad today LOL. Your English is exceptional for a second language, so I'm sure you understand what I mean LOL. But I mean it sincerely and keep it up.

- Tears in my eyes from ROFLMAO!
When I first started reading in forums and myspace things a couple years ago, I couldn't figure out what these LOL, and ROLF and I would ask, but it was such common place, I would get ignored, then someone gave me a link to a dictionary, and LOL cats has one.
The anipals on Twitter have MOL(meow out loud) and BOL(bark out loud) and a bunch others.
Awsome lens! Thanks
