The Best Cycling Videos
My personal quest for the best cycling videos began with the 1989 Tour win of the great American Cyclist Greg Lemond. I began taping the one hour specials on TV every Sunday. That just didn't seem enough. Aren't you glad with live in the time of OLN and Vs TV? I sure am. We know have so many more options to watch cycling on TV as well as some great DVD's available of all our favorite races. From Le Tour to Romandi to Pari Roubaix and more. We now have a lot more to watch, especially during those long indoor training sessions during the colder months. Here is a selection of my favorite videos and most exciting races as well as some training specific selections.
Breaking Away
One of the best all-time cycling videos.
This is one of the best cycling videos ever. I remember watching this and just wanting to ride. Steve Tesich won an Oscar for his semi-biographical screenplay about four 19-year-olds who don't know what to do after high school. Dave Stohler (Dennis Christopher) and his three friends--ex-football star Mike (Dennis Quaid), wily comedian Cyril (Daniel Stern), and tough kid Moocher (Jackie Earle Haley)--are doomed to live in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, where the local kids (nicknamed "Cutters"--a derogatory reference to quarry workers and their blue-collar families) are looked down on by the uppity students of nearby Indiana University.Stohler escapes into a world of Italian bicycling, picking up the lingo, the accent, and a good share of the talent of his heroes. He is also the scourge of his father's life. The used-car salesman (Paul Dooley) doesn't understand his son's affection for bicycling or, for that matter, his pride in being a "Cutter."
This is a must see for any cycling enthusiasts. You can purchase this DVD here.
Quicksilver
Kevin Bacon on a bike - Yeah!
This movie isn't really about cycling all the much but hey, if you are a bike messenger, or ever where, you've seen this movie. Kevin Bacon does a great job and he does it on a bike. Love it!You can purchase this DVD at Amazon.com.
American Flyer
No cycling library is complete without this DVD.
Sports physician Marcus persuades his unstable brother David to come with him and train for a bicycle race across the Rocky Mountains. He doesn't tell him that he has a cerebral tumor. While David powerfully heads for the victory, Marcus has to realize that the contest is now beyond his capabilities. / Features great views of the Rockies and an insight in the tactics of bicycle races. American Flyers could roughly be referred to as a cross between Breaking Away (also written by Steve Tesich) and Brian's Song.Kevin Costner does a great job in this movie. I'm not a huge fan of his, but this movie is a must see. The scene where they out-pedal a chasing dog I relive every training ride when I encounter one of my doggie friends.
You can pick it up here.
Maginificent 7 - Lance's 7th Tour de France Victory!
One of the greats - you get to relive this historic cycling moment again.
Without doubt, Lance Armstrong has been the best Tour de France cyclist and one of the best endurance athletes of all time. He surpassed Indurain's record of 5 consecutive wins and then topped that with this amazing performance. Dedication, focus, training and an awesome team to support him helped him to achieve this unthinkable, and most likely, never accomplished again feat. Relive this thrilling tour and ride like Lance!Magnificent 7 (2005 Tour de France 12-Hour DVD; 6 pc.)
Greg Lemond at his Best
One of the greatest cycling performances.
In one of the most thrilling Tours de France, Greg Lemond wins his third tour and inspires hundreds of thousands of wide eyed teenagers to pick up a bike and take on the world. I bought my first road bike after watching this tour and can't help but get fired up on my indoor trainer when I watch it.Pick your copy up here.
Learn to climb better
A great cycling training video.
Climbing can be one of the hardest parts of cycling. Some are born power climbers while others struggle every year to keep up with the pack. This video does a good job of helping you climb better.I've always struggled in this area and when I follow this video, I perform better. It is a great video for off season training as well as early season.

2005 Milan San Remo Paris Nice
Some of the best of 2005 Cycling
la classica di Primavera and Paris Nice. These are my two favorite races that aren't the grand tours. While favorite Alessandro Petacchi rode a near perfect race to win convincingly, many struggled during this race in March. It is a great addition to any library.
