It is best to avoid Cyprus with its Mediterranean climate in July and August. However, its past has had so many exciting adventures woven into it with constant takeovers, that it is truly an interesting place to visit.
St. Hilarion Castle with its magnificently overgrown gardens blends into the steep cliff sides. Full of hidden rooms, mysterious tunnels, and steep staircases, St. Hilarion Castle provides breathtaking adventure in more than one manner. Although legend has it that the castle once had more than a hundred rooms including one for a fairy queen, the truth is that the castle is named after a monk who fled persecution.
Kolossi Castle may actually be more of a fortified tower than a castle, yet it draws many to witness its incongruous presence in between the homes and vineyards of the village of Kolossi. Accessible by a drawbridge, the castle offers spiral staircases leading to large chambers on two separate levels. Little remains that suggest what life in the castle may have been like. However, it reminds a strong reminder of the rule of the Knights of St. John.
Lefkosia offers a laid back atmosphere that is perfect for relaxation and shopping. The area provides numerous museums and excellent restaurants with mouth watering cuisine. Moreover, art has a visible presence in Lefkosia for those who wish to see it.
The Troödos Mountains are located in the country's southern region. Magnificent in its beauty, Troödos is inundated with frescoed monasteries dating back to the fifteenth century. Walking trails are pleasant despite the heat that often persists in the area. The Kykkos Monastery is a veritable museum of religious icons. However, the Asinou Monastery is probably more beautiful despite the arduous trek it takes to get there.
Wine making villages abound in Cypress and offer terrific sight seeing adventures. An archeological site that is also worth the trip is Salamis, a pre-Christian city. It has a completely restored Roman amphitheatre and unique mosaics of eye catching beauty.
