The Cypriot Village of Cyprus

Ranked #11,757 in Holidays & Celebrations, #202,702 overall

A fantastic way to enjoy your life - you have to try it.

Travelling from one village to the next in Cyprus, what was so unexpected and which took us by surprise was just how many people welcomed us into their houses as we were just passing by. People who did not know us and there we were sitting down eating and drinking with them, trying to understand the language. This welcoming hospitality surprised us so much and, above all, the Cypriots' very friendly nature, which also shows in their children at a very young age. Even though there is a language barrier, we have just started trying to learn some Greek.

Thank you Cyprus

We come from a small village in North Devon, England, which is very beautiful in many aspects. However, when we decided to have a holiday in Cyprus over 8 years ago, little did we know what was going to hit us over the next few years. About 6 years back, we were looking around Cypriot villages and were just fascinated by how relaxed the Cypriot people are. So we decided to look into having a small house constructed. Some time later we had our house built in a lovely traditional Cypriot village, away from the tourist resorts and it has been great. So things are looking good for us - just to be happy in what we do. We have put this down to the Cypriot friends we have made, their culture and, of course, the sunshine. We thank them for that and for putting a great big smile on our faces :))

Village Life

Cypriot Mud House Village life follows a slower pace than the major towns. Life in the villages follows a pace reflecting the importance of agri-culture and close family ties.Traditional flat roofed village houses made of mud brick are a common sight, while stone-built dwellings with tiled roofs can be seen in the mountains and many village houses feature delightful vine-shaded courtyards. If you have a desire to move to Cyprus, please ask for information and we will do all we can to help you.

A village Cypriot house

Like us, you may fall in love with this lovely island and decide to have a house constructed. From our experience, we made a few trips all over the island and found where we wanted to live, so we had good information from the locals where we needed to start. The village where we stay is 15 minutes from the sea, heading inland up the Troodos mountain range. There are plenty of plots for sale and they are a lot cheaper than on the coast. In every village there is a head person called the Muktar, he is the offical officer for the Government for that village.

Lovely Layia Village

type=textWelcome to Layia. Our aim is to preserve the traditional Cypriot culture and way of life and to offer a holiday experience which gives a taste of the old Cyprus. Layia village is surrounded by mountain scenes and there are large orchards all within walking distance, where fruit is available for picking all year long. Mostly citrus fruit such as oranges, tangerines and lemons can be found here, as well as many others - grapes, figs, pomegranates, apricots and carobs to name but a few. Olive trees which ripen in the winter time can also be found in the orchards. These are picked by the villagers and taken to the olive mill, where they are pressed to produce pure vigin olive oil. Visitors are welcome to help pick olives and go on to the mill to see how the oil is made, There is olive oil on tap and you will find fresh toast to dip into the fresh oil, it is a wonderful taste of the good life. Up in the hills of Layia village, there are so many places to go if you like hiking or just to go for an evening stroll under the stars and look up at the Milky Way, trying to catch the shooting stars overhead. In the village there is a Taverna and fresh bread and groceries are delivered daily. If you would like to stay at Layia Village and experience this way of life, please contact us by e-mail and we will do our best to make your stay a happy one. The memories will last a lifetime as you discover the heart and soul of Cyprus
