Cyst on Ovaries While Pregnant
The presence of a cyst on ovaries while pregnant is a medical issue that affects both the mother and the developing fetus. It is made complicated by the fact that two lives are at stake, so surgery is often chosen as the last resort.
If a cyst on ovaries while pregnant develops into a size bigger than the acceptable borderline dimension of 2.5 inches in diameter (about the size of a baseball), then surgery is still sometimes performed, even if it does pose a risk. When weighed against the risks brought about by the continued existence of the cyst, it is, indeed, advisable to move towards its removal. The risks of having a cyst on ovaries while pregnant include abortion or pre-term labor, internal bleeding (if the cyst ruptures), and cancer.

When is surgery necessary?
The surgery to remove a cyst on ovaries while pregnant may be the best option for the survival of both the mother and the child when, apart from the size of the cysts exceeding the borderline size, it is found to have a thickened wall and/or a solid interior. This could mean that the cysts are malignant or cancerous. Also, a cyst on ovaries while pregnant should be removed if it continues to grow, as it will compete with the fetus for space in the abdominal cavity and for nutrition, eventually squeezing the baby.
When should these cysts be removed?
The removal of a cyst on ovaries while pregnant, as earlier mentioned, does have its risks. The safest time in which to remove these kinds of cysts will be during the second trimester, which is sometime within the 4th to the 6th month of pregnancy. It is at this time that the fetus is viable enough to survive the rigors of the operation procedure (anesthesia, physical trauma, etc.), while still being a long way away from being born, rendering the chances of pre-term labor significantly lesser. A cyst on ovaries while pregnant should be taken out completely as it can grow back, especially if it is found to be malignant.
How are these cysts removed?
There are two ways to remove a cyst on ovaries while pregnant. The first is the less invasive laparoscopy procedure, which is also known as the keyhole surgery. As its moniker suggests, the surgery is performed with small incisions. It is, however, generally used for smaller cysts and may not work as well for particularly large cysts.
The second option is the laparotomy, or "open" surgery to take out the cysts. This type of surgery to remove a cyst on ovaries while pregnant poses more of a danger as it causes more trauma and stress on both the mother and the child. It is, however, necessary for larger cysts that won't fit on the scope.
Whatever treatment procedure you and your physician may go for, know that many a cyst on ovaries while pregnant is treatable only if you act on it in a timely manner. Don't wait until it is too late.
