Cystitis is the inflammation of the bladder due either to an infection or irritation. It is most common in women but anyone can get Cystitis. It can be particularly painful when passing urine. Cystitis normally affects the bladder but can, more rarely, affect the kidneys.

For anyone who has ever had Cystitis, the symptoms are pretty recognisable and include:

-A stinging, burning sensation when passing urine
-Increase in the frequency of urination
-A feeling of needing to urinate urgently even when there is little or no urine to pass
-Dark, cloudy urine which is strong smelling
-Blood in the urine
-Pain or tenderness in the lower back or lower abdomen
-a general feeling of being unwell

Cystitis is most often caused by bacteria entering the urethra and travelling towards the bladder, causing infection and irritation.
Women get cystitis more than men because, in women, the urethra is nearer to the back passage which is where bacteria from the bowel can collect. This means that it is relatively easy for bacteria to travel into the bladder.

It is easy to glance at the symptoms above and think of Cystitis of just another of those minor, irritating health problems. However, those of us who have had cystitis know full well that it is one of the most debilitation, agonising conditions imaginable. There are very few illnesses which can keep me awake throughout the night-but Cystitis certainly can!
Antibiotics are often routinely used to treat Cystitis. However, as we all know, their efficacy diminishes over time so for those of us who suffer from Cystitis more than once this is not necessarily the best solution.
