Your first 'product' is You!

Your key to successful self promotion is to be able to sell yourself in a positive way. For myself and most of the people I know, selling doesn't come naturally ( this has been a problem for me..since I'm in the business of sales.) But, I have found that the only way I could improve the sales in my business, was to improve the way others perceived me. I needed to find a way to sell Myself.

So, what do you think comes to other people's mind when they think about you? Is it positive, negative or indifferent? Is it anything you've ever thought about before? It's pretty important that we develop and manage our own image, otherwise, we've opened the door and invited others to do this for us and we lose control of how we are perceived by others

What Is Your Brand?

The business of creating and managing ourselves and our image is called personal branding. A brand is the relationship or perception something, or someone, holds in the mind of others, most often the consumer. For example, when you think of Rolls Royce, what comes to your mind? I would answer "top of the line" and "success".

A brand translates our unique 'salespitch', or what separates us from the competition. If only to yourself, it should be a brief, memorable statement that identifies you to your audience. It is important to remember that you don't go through life with just one Personal Brand. Depending on what you're communicating or selling and to whom, you can identify and communicate a Personal Brand that is right for each particular situation. My 'brand' is much different when dealing with my local gallery representative, than it is when dealing directly with online collectors.

5 Ways to Promote Yourself

1. Write articles or 'rewrite articles' (in your own words...never copy or plagarize) and offer them for free publication. These articles can also be subject matter for a new lens on Squidoo.
2. Give a 'freebie'. You could create and giveaway an ebook, a promotional sample of the product you are selling, free subscription to your online ezine. Something that will work in your favor, to get the consumer to feel good about purchasing something from you.
3. Build and use your email mailing list. Then periodically provide your list of subscribers with information that they can use for their benefit and you can use to promote yourself and your business.
4. Use directory listings! There are tons of online directories that will let you have a free listing. It might take a little time to do it manually, but these are free chances to promote yourself!
5. Add a business card/bio signature to the end of every email. This is an ongoing chance to promote yourself but, be sure to keep it short and simple.

Personal Brand Wiki

A very brief description of personal branding.

Personal branding is the process whereby people and their careers are marked as brands.Daniel J. Lair, Katie Sullivan, and George Cheney (2005). Marketization and the Recasting of the Professional Self. Management Communication Quarterly 18 (3): 307?343. It has been noted that while previous self-help management techniques were about self-improvement, the personal branding concept suggests instead that success comes from self-packaging.Lair, Sullivan, and Cheney. The term is thought to have been first used and discussed in an 1997 article by Tom Peters.

Personal branding often involves the application of one's name to various products. For example, celebrity real-estate mogul Donald Trump uses his last name extensively on his buildings and on the products he endorses (e.g., Trump Steaks).

I just published a book, My Mother's Shoes, and I'm finding that I have to sell myself more than the book. I'm a teacher but basicly I'm quiet and shy. It's been an interesting challenge.
