D&D, Oldschool or Epic?

Come and Join the Fun

Do you play Dungeons and Dragons? Do you want to? There are so many people are curious but never take the step and play, because they are afraid what other people will think. Just remember, chances are they play too. I went from having no group to having too many people who wanted to play. The secret? When people ask what I'm doing on Sunday, I just tell them, I'm playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends. You'd be surprised at how many people ask if they can come along. So check it out, its a chance to get out of your own skin and be yourself (or someone else) for the day.

What is D&D?

All right, so the first question is: what is D&D? D&D is a roll playing game where people create a character and fight againsed monsters and such, collecting loot along the way. That's the textbook definition, but it is so much more than that. There is a whole culture behind D&D, It is hobby, but it becomes more than that.
The game has become a bit of a tradition in my family, my mother played, I played with my brother when we were kids, and now I have a group and we play almost every weekend. Its a social thing, a chance to see my friends who have the same interests as me, to share experiences from different games, and laugh at what this or that character did that time. In some ways, my D&D group knows me better than any of my other friends, because they get to see all the people I would like to be, but can't in real life. It really is a world where your imagination is the only limit.
So then comes the questions. Is it a Cult? Is it outdated? Why play D&D when you can just turn on a computer? For me its really very simple. Yes, its an old game, but its had all that time to get better. No, its not a cult, its no different than a poker group (except considerably nerdier). And why not just turn on the computer? Because then it would no longer be social. Its not all about the game, sometimes its about the people you play with. Its an exercise for your imagination and your brain, it allows you to do what you want, not what the computer thinks you should be able to. The rules are guidelines, and can be overruled by the Dungeon Master. When you are the DM, you are god, you can do anything.

Roll a D6

This is just a fun song to illustrate how awesome D&D can really be.

Dice

Dice are an integral part of this game. There are many different kinds of dice but the ones that are used most often are the d20, d6, d%, and d4. The number represents how many sides there are to the dice, and the percent is actually a set of two 10 sided dice, one with 1 digits numbers, and and one with 2 digit number, that are rolled together to give you a percentage. Ex. If you roll an 8 and a 30, you have 38%. The d20 is the most used by far, because you need it for all your saves, attack rolls, skills, and pretty much anything that happens it the roll playing aspect of the game. The d6 is the most common dice used for damage rolls, and can also be used instead of a d3.

Metal Dice

Metal Dice are great to play with. They have a wonderful weight to them, they roll well, they feel nice in your hand... And of course they are shiny. I gave my boyfriend a set of the copper ones for Christmas, and he uses them so much that the leather bag is starting to fall apart. This is in a house with two boxes full of dice of every color you can imagine. Giving metal dice to a D&D player is like giving your wife diamonds, they just can't get enough.

Core Rule Books

I have only included the rulebooks for 3.5, because despite the release of 4.0, I still think this is the best edition. It is the most complex, but also has the most opportunity for creativity. I like to think outside of the box, and I found that 4.0 just didn't let me do that.

Monster Manuals

There are 5 Monster Manuals, all of witch have different creatures in them. These are really handy for a Dungeon Master to have because they give more variety, as well as for players because monster levels are always fun to take.

Miniatures

You need miniatures to represent yourself and monsters during fights. You don't have to buy them, you can use anything that takes up the right amount of space on you map, but it is fun to have the right models. I have played with everything you can think of, from tea boxes to represent huge creatures to chess pieces, my group even has a guy who makes the miniatures out of Sculpy. I personally enjoy painting the lead figurines, but more a collectors item than as a necessity of the game.

Do you like the social aspect of D&D or would you rather turn on a computer and play?

I love that I can socialize and have my nerdy fun at the same time!

I enjoy the social aspect waay more! DnD isn't just about playing a game. It's about exploring your friends and other people through Dialog, and having fun with them.

glockr says:

When I used to play, it was with friends. We lived in an area with lots of abandoned mines so sometimes we'd run the game in an old mine shaft. Don't think I would have enjoyed playing on the computer.

lily says:

I love my D&D days!

alex89 says:

D&D is my Sunday routine, its the time when I get to see friends I don't always see during the week, and have fun and relax. I like computer games, but its not the same!

I'd rather just turn on the computer, then no one knows its me!

LabKitty says:

Does Nethack count? We played Nethack back in the day. Nethack was pretty cool. We're going to stop saying "Nethack" now.

Great lens - brings back some good memories. Don't have time for AD&D any more though.
