D-mannose works. Period.
This lens is about my personal experience with d-mannose and how it cured my chronic bladder infections.
If you decide to try d-mannose after reading my lens, please come back and let me know how it worked for you. This way other readers can benefit from your experience too.
I've included links to Amazon.com where you can buy d-mannose, and links to some great apparel or bumper stickers that raise important issues surrounding Western Medicine. I've also included a section on how d-mannose can help our animal friends suffering with urinary tact infections too!
Where It All Began And The Damage Antibiotics Caused Me
My use of Macrobid/nitrofurantoin caused severe damage to the joints, nerves, tendons, ligaments and muscles in my arms, and landed me in the emergency room. I also developed a myriad of other reactions to Marcobid/nitrofurantoin including peripheral neuropathy, numbness in my arms, numbness of the skin on my arms, numbness in my fingers, rash, fatigue, breathing problems, dizziness, tingling sensations, photosensitivity that resulted in painful red swelling of my arms, pain in the area of my gallbladder, and really too many others symptoms to list. This was all part of an allergic reaction to this drug.
After a year of the Macrobid therapy I tried both Cipro and Bactrim, both commonly prescribed antibiotics for the treatment of UTI's. Both of these prescription drugs exacerbated the condition of my arms so I stopped taking them.
I Didn't Know Where to Turn for UTI Treatment.....
Before I knew about d-mannose
After a year of combing the internet looking for a cure for the cystitis I was experiencing, drinking gallons of cranberry juice and popping cranberry supplements (which, like many uti suffers, actually made my symptoms worse) I stumbled upon an obscure testimonial by a woman who had experienced the same thing I was going through; bladder infections every time she had sex. Her situation was resolved when she began taking the gylconutrient D-mannose.
D-Mannose
A safe, effective, natural treatment for Bladder Infections
D-mannose has a unique relationship with the E-coli bacteria. Instead of attaching itself to the bladder wall, which causes infection, E coli will attach to the D-mannose. D-mannose also facilitates the detachment of E-coli bacteria that have already adhered themselves to the bladder wall. In effect, with my direct experience, D-mannose can both treat and prevent bladder infections.
Unlike antibiotics, the E-coli bacteria will not become resistant to D-mannose. Where antibiotics "kill" the E-coli bacteria, D-mannose attracts the bacteria and prevents it from remaining inside the bladder where it can cause infection. Your body then naturally flushes the E-coli from your bladder upon urination.
Light At The End Of The Tunnel
The first time I tried D-mannose it, it worked. And a year later, it continues to work. I have not developed a single bladder infection since taking this miracle sugar. I went from having a severe bladder infection every week, to having none at all. I can finally have intercourse without the fear of infection and horrendous side effects of antibiotics.

Side Effects Years Later
And I know I am not alone in this...
Sometimes people who have experiences chronic urinary tract infections also develop a painful, distracting and perplexing disease called interstitial cystitis, or IC for short. This disease is challenging to treat and varies widely from person to person, but there is a lot people can do to help themselves control the symptoms.
I believe I have developed interstitial cystitis as a result of both the chronic urinary tract infections I had and due to my use of antibiotics. I am just beginning to understand more about this disease and hope to ease it's frustrating symptoms over time. I have developed a informational page about interstitial cystitis in which I have included information on treatment options, symptoms, support groups and books and supplements that can help control the disease and its symptoms which you can view here.
Things I've Learned and Things I've Tried to Help My Recovery
I read a lot of testimonials from people suffering both the effects of prescription drugs and the skepticism or outright disbelief of their prescribing doctors. Lives that have been permanently changed for the worse. Many of these individuals were like me; they were seeking a cure for the toxins swirling around in their bodies. An antidote, anything that could help them reclaim some of the health they used to feel. One woman I read about called Procter & Gamble Pharmaceutical Company to ask if there was an antidote to Macrobid or how to get the toxin out of a relatives' system. She reported being told that there was no antidote and no way to get the drug out of one's system.
In my continuing research into Macrobid/nitrofurantoin, I have learned and tried some things that I will pass along to you. One of the first things I learned was that Macrobid/nitrofurantoin can severely deplete the body of B12, and antioxidant compounds like glutathione, produced by the liver to combat free radicals. I have since increased my B12 supplementation but the glutathione is another matter. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant manufactured by the liver. The liver creates the compound using a number of precursors such as cysteine. While glutathione supplements are available but research shows that they are not well absorbed by the body. Instead, providing your body with the building blocks it needs to manufacture glutathione, like cysteine, may be the best way to increase its levels.
D-mannose and Animals
Also, there is a great video on the list here called "Urinary Tract Infections: the #1 Reason Cats Go to the Vet!" where the veterinarian, Dr. Mercola, talks about d-mannose's effects on not only cats, but dogs and horses. Please take a look, so far it's the only video testimonial I have found by an actual veterinarian attesting to d-mannose's beneficial effects on animals.
D-mannose products and a Great Book about Cystitis and Intersistial Cystitis
Cleartract - Cleartract Powder 50 Gram
This is the brand of d-mannose I usually use for treating urinary tract infections.
D-Mannose 1.75 oz (50 g) Pwdr
I've used this brand of d-mannose in the past with the the same successful uti preventing effects
D-Mannose 100% Pure Powder 3 oz
I've used this brand of d-mannose as well; same UTI preventative effects as the others
Doctors Choice, Naturally Global Sweet Polyols Manno-max D-mannose Powder, 50-gram Plastic Jar
I have not tried this brand of d-mannose, but I have read testimonials from people who say it works for them too!
You Don't Have to Live with Cystitis
I own this book. I found it very informative and learned a lot, like the fact that the use of antibiotics like macrobid can actually damage the lining of the bladder which can lead uti sufferers down the road to interstitial cystitis!

- Sheila,
Sorry to hear about your grandmother. I don't know if nitrofurantoin can raise blood sugar levels or not, but antibiotics seem to wage all manner of chaos in people's systems. D-mannose, I can tell you, does not raise blood sugar levels as it is not metabolized by the body. D-mannose is safe for people who are diabetic. D-mannose is an effective uti preventative.
I hope you and your grandmother get the help you need and that your grandmother experiences a healthy recovery.

- My grandmother has been on Nitrofurantoin for almost a year now and nothing kills this germ. A friend told me to go online and ask someone who may know the answer to this important question that I need to know. My grandmother is currently in the hospital for her heart condition but her Dr. has her on 50mg of Nitrofurantoin and I am suspecting the hospital may have missed a dose or 2 when she 1st came in. My question is, is that does this "Nitrofurantoin" increase blood sugar levels? My grandmother's also a diabetic but nothing like this. Her sugar has sky-rocketed up in 500 number range and I am worried. I don't know and the Dr's don't know what could be doing this. I am suspecting that the infection could be a factor as to why this is happeneing to her. If anyone has any input, I'm all ears! Thanks!
SRS.

- Hi Taren,
I understand how concerned you must be for the health of you baby. I know a lot of pregnant women suffer from bladder infections and are scared to put anything into their systems that is unnatural.
Since it has only been one day of taking the d-mannose I would keep going with that for at least 2 more days. How often are you taking the d-mannose? I would suggest doing one heaping teaspoon every hour and see how you start feeling.
I use d-mannose primarily as a preventative and it has never failed me. When I have felt an infection coming on I really increased my usual 1/2 teaspoon dose to 1 heaping teaspoon and took that every hour until I felt better.
I hope my advice will help you. If for any reason it doesn't, you need to see your doctor. In the future I would recommend taking the d-mannose as a daily preventative, at least until your baby is born. As a daily routine I take a 1/2 tsp in the AM and another 1/2 tsp in the evening.

- I really really want this to work. I'm a few weeks pregnant and I developed a UTI a few days ago. I've been taking d-mannose for a day but I haven't seen any improvement in my symptoms yet. Any words of encouragement? How long, in your experiences, did it take for d-mannose to take affect? I really don't want to start an antibiotic treatment because of my pregnancy, but if this doesn't work, I don't know that I'll have a better option.
