d3o - the facts!!
d3o (dee-three-oh) is a specially engineered material containing "intelligent molecules" which flow with you as you move but upon shock lock together to absorb the impact energy before returning to their original free flowing, malleable state.
So what does this mean to the average person walking down the street? Basically d3o offers superior lightweight, flexible impact protection which when integrated into apparel maintains style, comfort and practicality without compromising mobility. This integration offers individuals "the edge" through increased control with flexible yet highly effective protection. Think Spiderman versus Robocop; Spiderman can fly around skyscrapers in his rather fetching lyrca suit while, although impressive, Robocop's armour is somewhat chunky and obvious taking away from his superman appeal and recognising him to be an actual mortal. d3o aims to provide Spiderman's subtle, yet highly effective powers - you can even keep the lyrca if you must!!!
A few examples of d3o's use to date can be seen in a vast range of products such as GS race suits from Spyder as worn by the US ski team in the 2006 Winter Olympics; Sell's Contour goal keeper gloves for football (soccer) and Pro Pad shinguards; Racer MCR motorcycle gloves; ski and snow apparel manufacturers such as Schoeffel, Reusche, Kjus and Sessions have all adopted d3o, Sessions producing the world's first base layer combined with the impact protection technology and finally the 07/08 winter season is set to introduce Quiksilver and Ignite beanies containing d3o to the market for soft headwear with added protection, not a replacement to a helmet but better than a beanie! These are just a few applications, watch this space for many many more products coming out soon and the orange revolution!!!
In the run up...
We're slowly getting organised!
I've been spending my very rare spare time trying to get a grips of what Parkour, freerunning, tricking and the other disciplines really are and trying to understand the culture and philosophy of the sports - it's rather difficult unless your out there really experiencing it so I'm looking forward to learning more out with the guys in June. From doing some slight research I've definitely become more aware of the disciplines - not only is there a Brighton team (trying to get in touch with them at the mo!!!) but I also watched a team practising at the bottom of my street, the guys were young but very good and really enthusiastic!!!! so cool!!
Will definitely be getting on to learning more about the sports and the way they influence - along with the other stuff we get up to everyday at d3o HQ - this week looks set to be very busy with d3o being accepted into the Science Museum's national collection and Char and I heading up to London for the media launch, lots of work of course and oh yes, I'm off on holiday on Friday after a quick detor back to my old university (the University of Southampton) to have a chat about what I've done with my degree..um??? Be in touch before I head off!! Have a good week!

the weekend, a rainy London and lots of jumping
you wot?
So here I am on a Monday evening, sprawled unceremoniously on the sofa with the radio blarring staring at my laptop - I am supposed to be trying to work my way through the vastness of tasks I've acculumated since Friday (8 pages when I printed them out - I am not lying, it's scary!) but I just wanted to drop you a quick post to say hi and let you know what I've been up to recently!!Well the weekend, apart from being horribly grey and rainy was really good. Sunday saw Charlotte and I from d3o traveling up to London to catch up with some of the Parkour guys to find out more about exactly what Parkour is! Despite the glorious UK weather we had a great time and had a real insight into what's involved.
We met the guys at St Botolphs church in Central London before heading out to Kilburn and being able to sit in on a seminar from some of the leading Parkour guys in the world. The session was exhausting for us, and we were just watching, but it was great to be able to see what was expected from the guys and just how easy they made it look!!! Apparently we're going to have some lessons from the lovely Brad Wendes so you'll have a good giggle at those podcasts when they come out!! lol!
The guys were all so much fun, which leads me nicely to the little announcement I wanted to make - d3o will be heading out to Munich at the beginning of June to catch up with UK team at the first ever Parcouring World Championships (www.squidoo.com/d3o_parcouring)!! Keep an eye on this lense and the Parcouring one to find out how the guys got on and regular updates about the competition from yours truly! Be in touch soon!
Exciting d3o annoucement
coming soon...
It's been a while but we're back big time!!
Ok I've been lame I know but I'm back!!
In a quick sum up...the team recently flew out to New York for our design competition's awards night. It was my first time in the 'Big Apple' and I can honestly say I had the best time - not only was the event a great night and it was great to finally meet all of the winners who travelled from all around the globe to be there on the night, it was also an honour to be in one of the best cities in the world representing your company - oh yeah and the coffee wasn't bad either, although I missed out on the cheesecake so if anyone wants to send some over???
One of athletes, Kenton Cool, is currently sumitting Everest with his team for the fourth time!! Yes the fourth - mad man, check out his entries on our blog, truly inspiring! http://www.d3o.com/internal.php?cont=newsblog§ion=8
Exciting news coming up in the next few days so keep posted!!!
