The Classic TV Comedy Dad's Army

Set in the dark days of 1940 the battle of France and the miracle of Dunkirk have just happened. The country calls on all men to take up arms to fend off the dreaded Hun. This is the story of men too old to join the army, but willing to join the Home Guard; a force made up of bankers, bakers, butchers and undertakers and anyone else they could find.

One of the main characters is Captain Mainwaring a officious bank manager, he is in charge of the Walmington-on-Sea branch of the Home Guard. Other classic characters are Sgt Wilson the ex-public school boy who also works in the bank, Cpl Jones the old army campaigner and butcher, Private Pike(the stupid boy), Private Frazer the doom and gloom undertaker, Private Walker the spiv, Private Godfrey the old and infirm medic. This is the home guard and the plot is about their adventures and exploits against the enemy and the air raid warden Hodges, the verger and vicar along with their battles against other home guard units and the Germans.

They convert Jones Butchers truck to an army truck complete with holes for them to put their guns out and shoot. They are the underdogs in most of the episodes but normally come up smelling of roses, sometimes Captain Mainwaring is not always the winner, but this comedy is a classic of its time and once seen you will never grow tired of watching it. You can normally see it in the UK on one of the satalite sites, I'm not too sure about the US but you can buy it on both ebay and amazon
