Daffodils - The Wonder of Spring

Ranked #16,672 in Home & Garden, #236,367 overall

The top 10 reasons why daffodils are my favourite flowers!

Ever since I was a little girl, daffodils have been my favourite flower. In this Squidoo lens I explain the top 10 reasons why I like daffodils and I also showcase some of my favourite daffodil photos. All photos on this page are my own unless otherwise stated.

If you are inspired to plant some daffodils of your own, ready for next Spring, the best time to plant them is in Autumn. I've included some links where you can buy some daffodil bulbs too.

1. They're yellow!

Daffodils at West Lodge, Aylsham, NorfolkWell, most of them are, anyway! And if they're not yellow, they're usually a nice cream colour. Yellow has always been my favourite colour, followed by cream. I like it because it's a nice bright, cheerful, sunny colour.

2. They're a sign that Spring has begun

Cream daffodils at West Lodge, Aylsham, Norfolk, UKAfter a long cold winter, daffodils are one of the first signs that spring has begun. Daffodils usually open sometime between March and April, depending on the variety (some varieties open later than others). They're a typical symbol of spring. Spring is one of my favourite seasons because it signifies the start of a new year, thus it represents new beginnings and fresh hope and optimism for the future. The leaves start to grow back on the trees, flowers grow, and lambs are born, so it symbolises new life.

3. They bring back happy childhood memories

Riverside daffodils, Norwich, UKWhen I was young, my Dad lived just across the road from the Riverside in Norwich. Every spring, loads of daffodils would grow down by the river, and I used to enjoy running around in them. I also have happy memories of picking some daffodils and giving them to my Mum for Mother's Day.

4. They're everywhere!

It doesn't matter whether you live in the middle of a city or in a remote rural area, daffodils grow virtually anywhere - in people's gardens, in parks, by the roadside, in woodland etc.

5. They brighten up a springtime walk

Daffodils of different varieties by the riverside in Norwich, UKI love going for walks in spring, especially as there are several bank holiday weekends at that time of the year. I like to bring my digital camera and take photos of the different varieties of daffodils and other spring flowers.

6. Daffodils symbolise Easter

In the same way that seeing a snowy scene conjures up thoughts about Christmas, a cluster of daffodils is one of the symbols of Easter. Easter is a fun time for me - I get a couple of extra days off work and get to spend time with my family and friends.

7. They cheer me up in my day-to-day life

Unusual daffodils in Burlingham Woods, Norfolk, UKWhen I'm on the bus travelling to and from work, I like to look out of the window and see the daffodils by the roadside and in people's gardens. Even on a gloomy or otherwise dull day, there's nothing like a daffodil scene to perk up your spirits!

8. The anticipation

Just after a new year has begun, I like to look out for the daffodil stems emerging from the soil. Then I try to guess how long it will be before they start to bud and open completely.

9. Daffodils in the snow

Daffodils in the snowSometimes it still snows in March/early April and seeing daffodils in the snow is very pretty.

10. They're only out for a few weeks a year

This may seem strange, considering I like daffodils so much, but in some ways I like the fact that they're only out for about 4-6 weeks per year. It makes me appreciate them more. If something is there all the time, you tend to get so used to it that you hardly even notice it any more. Plus, it's something to look forward to after a long cold winter!

This lens brought back nice memories of my father. He was a flower gardener and always had lots of daffodils. I've never seen a pink daffodil...I bet they're beautiful.

I like the large yellow ones -- just seems traditinal to me! If I could, I'd have buckets of daffodils all spring long!
