Dahlia Flowers
There are about 30 species of dahlias and about 20,000 cultivars of the bushy perennial flowers. They originated in the mountainous areas of Central America. Dahlias produce flowers from midsummer to the first frost. They are classified by flower size and by the form of the flower. Dahlia flowers make a nice display in garden beds. Dahlias are good to cut and use in floral bouquets inside your home or to give as gifts. I photographed this dahlia in Seattle, Washington.
Dahlia flowers are easy to grow in your own backyard in well drained soil and full sun. Use a high-nitrogen liquid fertilizer every week in early summer. Switch to a high-potassium liquid fertilizer every week from mid-summer to early autumn.

- Nice lens! I have bittersweet memories of Dahlias as when I was at collage I worked in a market garden that grew fields of them. Week upon week of disbudding was such a bore.
