"I don't trust books. They're all fact, no heart." says Stephen Colbert. Now, while this may be true, Stephen has a lot of authors on his show who have written books that I want to read. So here's a list from the current season. You can also find bo...

- The Daily Show Community
- The Daily Show's community site. It has better access to video - current and archival - of the show, including better video players for embedding (though I believe all vids now have ads). But, they no longer have a book list. So all the more reason for this lens!

Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes On the World
George Chang ... really interesting interview! Well-spoken, articulate. Discussed the motives for Kim Jong-Il in conducting the recent missle test - what is domestically and internationally motivating these actions. Chang was incredibly articulate and seems to have keen insight into the internal politics of North Korea. Hopefully his writing is as straightforward as his interview style - this will be a great read!
American Bee: The National Spelling Bee and the Culture of Word Nerds
James Maguire was on discussing his new book about 6 spellers in the American National Spelling Bee. Surprisingly, no comparisons to Spellbound came up. Maguire followed 6 spellers and featured one of them in the book who actually won last year. Looking forward to reading this one!!

Warlord: No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy
Pantano was on the show on Monday, June 10. Very articulate. He served in both the Gulf and Iraq wars and brought some good insight into what soldiers were going through. Jon asked some good questions about what soldiers on the ground thought about the Bush Administration, but he let Pantano do most of the talking. It sounds like an interesting, but potentially painful read.
You, Me and Dupree
Owen Wilson was on promoting his new movie. He gives a fun interview .. funny, laid-back, a little stoned. Good times.
Straight from Washington
Even more about current politics and the current administration
Watchdogs of Democracy?: The Waning Washington Press Corps and How It Has Failed the Public
Helen Thomas was on the June 27th show. She is so incredible - such a charming, soft-spoken yet tough as nails woman. She has been in the Washington press corps since 1961 and has some interesting observations about what it was like then and now. I really look forward to reading her insights.
Current Politics
America: The Last Best Hope (Volume I): From the Age of Discovery to a World at War
Bennett was on the June 6th show. It was a fascinating interview, on the topic of gay marriage, though Stewart didn't let Bennett get a lot of voice-time. I want to read this just to try to understand the fundamental disconnect between Bennett saying America is unique and outstanding in history for the freedom we offer our citizens yet how he can espouse denying some of those citizens fundamental rights.
Impostor: How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy
Bartlett appeared on the show March 9, 2006. He was fired from a conservative think tank, The National Center for Policy Analysis (nca.org) after the book was published. Bartlett is quite congenial in the interview and presents a great, rationale conservative take on how anti-conservative George W. Bush really is.
America Back on Track
Kennedy appeared on the show April 20th. Not a lot of book talk. Pretty standard interview. Kennedy indicated that his book describes some of the issues with Bush and with the Democrats; his book hearkens back to a time when Democrats rallied Americans around a "can do" attitude and spirit.
Man in the Shadows: Inside the Middle East Crisis with a Director of Israel's Mossad
Halvey was on the show April 24. Calm, cool, collected. Just what you would expect from the former head of Mosad. In charge 4 years, second in command for another 3 and with Mosad a total of 40! Sounded great - can't wait to read it!
The K Street Gang: The Rise and Fall of the Republican Machine
Continetti was on the show on May 1, 2006. Young, Republican and full of energy, Continetti details how the Republican party has let a few power-hungry idealogues get in the way of true republicanism. Sounds like a fascinating read from a young party-member's perspective. Continetti gave a great interview, articulate and engaging; I look forward to his book being the same!
The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God, and World Affairs
Albight was on the show on May 2, 2006. She gave a great interview - so smart and snappy. Her book discusses the relationship between Bush's assertion of power and his belief in his divine right to rule (I mean, to govern). Can't *wait* to read this!
Open Target: Where America Is Vulnerable to Attack
Ervin was on the show on May 3, 2006. First, I can't believe Jon said nothing about his name being Clark Kent Ervin! In any case ... Ervin, former inspector general of Homeland Security in the US, states that the US is still vulnerable to attack, even after all of the post-911 rhetoric. He believes that there are a number of "simple steps" that the US can take (e.g. inspect cargo, more people at the border) to shore up their safety. Details in the book.
The U.N. Exposed: How the United Nations Sabotages America's Security and Fails the World
Shawn appeared on the May 9th show.
A Heckuva Job: More of the Bush Administration in Rhyme
Calvin Trillin was on the June 19th show. Charming and slightly bemused, Trillin read from the title poem about Bush appointing former FEMA head Michael Brown. Funny. Can't wait to pick this up .. or see if there is an audio version read by him!
Technology, Science, the Environment and Global Issues
The big, important and super-interesting stuff
An Inconvenient Truth: The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It
Gore appeared on the June 28th show. More charming and effusive since entering private life, Gore shared his reasons for writing the book & filming the documentary. He also answered questions about how the right reacts to his stance on the environment and why this really isn't a political issue, but a moral one. I've seen Al Gore deliver the talk that the film is based on. It is incredibly powerful! I look forward to reading the book.
American History
Books about American History, or America in history .. you know, stuff in the past.
American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation
Meecham appeared on the show April 17, 2006. The managing editor of Newsweek, Meecham has two other books to his credit. In American Gospel, Meecham presents an argument that both the left and the right have gone too far in claiming that America was intended, by the Founding Fathers, to be a secular state or a Christian state, respectively. He argues that the two documents that define America, the Constitution and the Declaration, must be read together to achieve a balance between the two extremes. Profiles in Courage (P.S.)
The extraordinary Caroline Kennedy was on the show June 5, talking about the Profiles in Courage awards. This edition of the book has a forward by her. I've never read the entire book, but only one of profiles. The book certainly hearkens back to a nobler time in American politics. A reminder we could all use.
Music and Movies
Arts, Culture and Entertainment
The few books that aren't about politics or American history
And They All Sang: Adventures of an Eclectic Disc Jockey
Terkel appeared on the show on April 4, 2006. Very interesting .. great storyteller. Just what you would expect, a cantankerous old coot. Studs Terkel Website: http://www.studsterkel.org/
More Flanimals
Ricky Gervais appeared on April 3, 2006. He and Jon had a great interview (hopefully, it will show up on the Comedy Central website), but really didn't talk about the book. It seems to be a sequel to Flanimals, but I don't know what that is about either. According to the reviews on Amazon, parents and kids alike love Flanimals. Hmmm ...
Eat This Book: A Year of Gorging and Glory on the Competitive Eating Circuit
Nerz was on the program on April 18, 2006. This chronicles his year of following people around the competitive eating circuit, a "sport" he claims is the fastest growing in America.
Reporting: Writings from The New Yorker
Remnick appeared on the May 8th show. He is the current editor of the New Yorker and has just released a collection of his past writings (the "good stuff" edition).
The Tao of Willie: A Guide to the Happiness in Your Heart
Willie Nelson appeared on the May 18th show. Nelson is extremely affable & charming. Part memoir, part philosophy, part joke-book, if you're a fan of Willie and his easy-nature, you'll love "The Tao of Willie".
