As defined by the Anti Car Theft Act, an auto salvage yard is "an individual or entity engaged in the business of acquiring or owning junk or salvage automobiles for resale in their entirety or as spare parts for rebuilding, restoration, or crushing."

This definition encompasses scrap-vehicle shredders and scrap metal processors, salvage auctions, and pull-a-part yards.

Insurance companies define a salvage title as a vehicle that is damaged by more than 75% of its market value.

Pull-A-Part:

One of the more common auto salvage yards in the past was the pull-a-part yard. These are not so common anymore due to the liability of having customers working on your property. The concept is in order to keep cost down, customers would bring their own tools and provide their own labor and remove the parts they needed from a salvaged car on the premises.

Online Service:

With the sophistication of the internet and the management of large databases, you can locate parts online through a network of auto salvage yards. There are literally millions of records stored in the database.

Car Crushing:

Once a salvage yard has removed and/or sold all of the valuable components of a car, the carcass will be crushed in a hydraulic press. The remains will be sold to a recycler as scrap metal. The 2 common methods of car crushing are the pancake, where the car is crushed from above with a large flat plate, or the bailing press, which crushes the car into a small cube.

How to Locate a Salvage Yard:

Use an online directory to locate an auto salvage yard near you. If you are scrapping a used car, contact the nearest dealer to see if they offer free pick up service. There are literally thousands of auto salvage yards in the country.

Disposal of Your Junk Car:

Do you have a junker in the driveway that the neighbors and your spouse are complaining about? Are you paying insurance on a car that you are not operating? Did you know that a donation could be tax deductable? There are an abundance of salvage yards that will take your car off your hands at no cost to you. Some services will even use a portion of the proceeds from your scrap as a donation to charities. Over a million Americans use a free service to remove junk cars from their property each year.
There are a few things to consider when you dispose of your junk car. First and foremost, you need to notate on the title that the car is for salvage only. This will reduce your liability should someone take your vehicle and attempt to repair it and put it back into service.
You must have a title. Auto salvage yards will not accept cars without a title in most cases. This is to ensure that the vehicle is not stolen or perhaps has a bank lien.
Be sure the company towing the vehicle is insured; otherwise, if there is an incident while the car is being towed, the liability may fall back on you.

The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS):

The NMVTIS is a resource for information on vehicles that at some point have been in the possession of an auto salvage yard. The information is used to ensure that junk cars and trucks are not sold at a later date. It also ensures that VIN numbers from salvage cars are never used on stolen cars.
NMVTIS reporting is mandatory; this makes it much easier to detect potential cloning of stolen and wrecked vehicles. The information is available to both consumers and state government agencies.
Auto salvage yards are required to report the following information for all vehicles they obtain:
- Name, address, and contact info
- VIN#
- Date the vehicle was obtained
- Name of the individual from whom the vehicle was obtained
- Disposition of the vehicle: crushed, disposed of, or offered for sale for other purposes
- Is the vehicle intended for export?

The Environment:

The disposal of solid and hazardous waste generated by salvage yards is regulated by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The DNR has implemented rules and laws to prevent contamination of the air, groundwater, and the land in or around salvage yards.
The DNR mandates that a salvage yard apply for and maintain storm water permits. Salvage yards must also be certified to remove Freon from salvaged cars.
