About the Tango

Tango, also referred to as the "Dance of Love", is a passionate and dramatic dance. It represents almost theatrical piece of emotions - love, hate, fear, desire - all expressed through sensual movements and passion. Tango is somewhat different from other dances, especially traditional ballroom, but next in popularity behind the waltz and foxtrot. Dissimilar to waltz and foxtrot, it has no rise & fall, no swaying. Tango was born over 100 years ago. It was created by people who wanted to express their emotions, who were in search of spiritual freedom and who longed for their homeland and their roots. Its moves are sometimes slow and gliding, and other times sharp and clipped. It's a beautiful dance that offers a wonderful, sensual experience.

Tango History

Tango was born over a hundred years ago in South America, of many cultures, styles and ideologies. It had its beginnings in the ports of Rio de la Plata (Argentina & Uruguay) with immigrants who arrived in search of a better life, but who also longed for home. There, poor immigrants from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland, and Russia mixed and mingled with African slaves and shared their dance traditions with each other. Cuban and African musical styles and instruments were introduced, and an early style of the tango was born. Over the years several different styles of the tango have evolved, but the original Argentine Tango remains the most favorite. Although its popularity has waxed and waned over the generations, it's become one of the most famous dance styles in the world.
