The Samba originates from Brazil and is that country's official dance. The Samba is danced as a festival dance during the street festivals carnival and parades. When one sees pictures of people dancing at Carnival in Rio, it is the Samba.

The Samba became popular internationally in the 1920's and 30's and was stylized and made to have danceable patterns by ballroom dancers for use in partner dancing. In International style Latin dancing, the Samba is one of the five Latin competition dances. In Brazil, the form of Samba is more of a single person dance. The music has an joyful contagious rhythm and Samba rhythm can be found in many top 40 songs. The festive style and mood of the dance has kept it alive and popular.

Samba Dance steps

Samba is danced in a closed position, with partners slightly apart. The lady's right hand and the man's left hand are held about the lady's eye level. The man's right hand is placed on the lady's shoulder blade. The lady's left hand is placed flat on the man's back. Samba step is a very simple. Samba dance to the rythum of 1-uh-2,3-uh-4.

Samba steps for Men:

Step forward with your left foot (count 1)
Move your right foot to your left foot (uh)
Left foot in place, weight shifts to it (count 2)
Step backward with your right foot (count 3)
Move your left foot to your right foot (uh)
Right foot in place, weight shifts to it (count 4)

Samba steps for Ladies:

Step backward with your right foot (count 1)
Move your left foot to your right foot (uh)
Right foot in place, weight shifts to it (count 2)
Step forward with your left foot (count 3)
Move your right foot to your left foot (uh)
Left foot in place, weight shifts to it (count 4)
