Dance Dance Revolution
Before there was Wii Fit, there was Dance Dance Revolution. It's still a great way to get in shape. This product review is by a middle-aged woman with arthritis who found out that DDR is not just a video game for kids.
"You'll need different shoes."
I glanced down at my ugly gym shoes and back at the gleaming warehouse-sized room full of chrome and mirrors, alien technology exercise machines, and skinny well-toned folks who'd just stepped off the bus from Hollywood wearing designer spandex that actually flattered them, complete with matching water bottles.
My t-shirts and sweats weren't going to cut it with this crowd. I was feeling more and more like a potato.
I left the McGym in a daze, having paid my $100 initiation fee and two-month deposit and $50 personal trainer fee and all the other things that followed in bewildering succession upon, "Hey, is there some way I could use your elliptical trainer a few hours a week?"
The next day, I marched back into Glitterati McGym and asked for my money back. Then I zipped over to Chez Target and bought a $70 dance pad and Dance Dance Revolution.
I went home. I drew all the blinds. ALL the blinds. I swapped my game console's controller for the dance pad. In half an hour I had Cindi Lauper, David Bowie, techno, rap, and insanely cheerful J-pop playing out of the speakers and was dancing around like a giddy teenager.
Well, not quite. I'm middle-aged with arthritic knees, so I had to avoid the hops at first. I'm still playing the game at the basic level. But I'm doing aerobic exercise every day for an hour, when I've been a blob for several years. It even helped me get ready for surgery -- my surgeon was incredibly impressed with how quickly I was up and about after a myomectomy!
Think Simon crossed with Twister, and you've got Dance Dance Revolution.
A Video Game That Gets You In Shape
There's so many different versions of Dance Dance Revolution out there that I'm not going to list them all. (In Europe it's called Dancing Stage.) It's available for Playstation, GameCube, Xbox, and Wii. There's one version that plugs right into your TV if you don't have a game console. You'll see kids in the malls dueling each other on arcade versions with handrails, trying to rack up the best score. Schools use them in P.E., because kids actually want to exercise with DDR. There are regional competitions for cash and other prizes, and kids get together at each others' houses for Dance Dance Revolution parties. The concept is simple.
Pick a song. Choreographed steps rise up the screen. When they cross a bar at the top, step on the matching symbol. Catchy music and computer graphics or music videos provide an attractive backdrop that you usually don't have time to notice.
Since I've got bad joints, I started out slowly, sticking to easy songs and never taking both feet off the floor. Some steps require you to hop and land on two symbols at once. I overdid it the first week and had to ease off, but now I'm doing the hops easily and getting better at the fast sequences.
You score according to your accuracy. You get bonuses for "Combos" -- hitting many steps in a row accurately. At first I was stumbling; after a few weeks I'm easily getting a full combo (start to finish of one song) at the lowest setting.

Kids Far More Coordinated Than the Rest of Us

Dance Revolution: Fitness for Gamers
There are two-player versions available for home use, as well as various styles of dance pads from metal to soft plastic. If you connect a live cam to your game console, you can watch yourself dance and add hand motions to the game. I'd probably get hopelessly confused, but more coordinated people might enjoy it.All I can say is: it's fun, it works, and it's the most painless form of aerobic exercise I know besides swimming. Kids enjoy it because it's a social activity. Personally, I enjoy being able to exercise in the privacy of my own home.
My Special Dance Dance Revolution Pad

After six months of playing, I decided it was time to upgrade my basic pad that came with the game, mainly because it tended to wrinkle and slip. After reading reviews and getting feedback from DDR enthusiasts, I picked this one. Apart from the strong smell of plastics, which has faded with time, I've been extremely satisfied.
Features: Extra-thick foam pad gives support even if you've got a concrete slab beneath the floor, and the grippy bottom keeps the pad from slipping, a common complaint with the basic pad that comes with the game. It's supposed to be more durable (although I haven't had much trouble with my original pad). Also, I like having all but the trigger keys-- it lets me play regular video games on my toes!
There's several Red Octane brand pads, and a lot of DDR enthusiasts recommend them.

- I'm 'grandma-aged' and had never heard of DDR before I read your lens. Sounds interesting. But it's probably 'beyond my ability' now :-). Well, maybe not! Anyway, enjoyed learning about it.
