However, a talent artist still needs to take the lessons and practice till he or she can establish himself on the music canvas, theatre, band and cinema.

The origin of Salsa is based on the Son dancing and a lot of steps and movements have gone to improvise the contemporary Salsa dancing. It has an element of Latin America as well as North America and is unceasingly evolving.
Salsa seemingly appears tough but it is not so. Once you have mastered the fundamentals steps, you can add on to your dancing repertoire. The most common step is the three weight steps in four beat measures. Another step is the break step in which the dancer has to change the direction maintain the salsa steps. The unique thing about salsa is to keep the upper body stiff and unaffected by the weight or step changes whereas hips are the ones that move continuously and quite a bit.
If you have been dancing earlier, you have an edge and a dance background, which might be either positive or negative. For instance ballerinas often end up as expert salsa dancers, whereas if you have tried some mumbo-jumbo, modern hop than you carry it with you and it becomes pretty difficult to get rid of those weird leaps. In that case, it is better to start as beginner without any dance background. However the pace and the expertise building are very individualistic and a novice can sometime beat a perfectionist if the salsa lessons are taken seriously. The key is practice, practice and practice. For example some dancers that take up Salsa have a beautiful salsa body movement, understanding that the steps and the footwork are completely different though.
The rudimentary techniques and ground rules of Salsa Dancing remain the same- Basic Footwork, Salsa Rhythm, Timing Consciousness, Dancing Stance, Attitude and Grip. It is very essential to grasp the nuts and bolts of Salsa basics to master the art.

I cannot stress the importance of the correct dance costumes especially Salsa dancing outfits. As the saying goes, the dancing outfits can break or make the salsa rhythms and movements. The clothing material is also important. Non stretching salsa clothes will have tendency to wear and tear. The salsa dancing outfits should be made of stretchable fabric, comfortable and durable. It is but natural to sweat a lot while practicing Salsa, hence it is obvious to bring 2 or 3 extra shirts. The latest in offerings that appeal to Salsa dancing outfits are Latin dance apparel, club wear, asymmetrical skirts, flare pants and swinging dresses.

- Salsa has been popular in Latin America for decades...I saw mylive Salsa performance in 1994 while working at a hotel that booked a International Ballroom Dancing Contest. Excellent lens that captures the essence of this very popular Latin Dance.

- I took a salsa dance course years ago and although I loved the beat of the latin music I did find the beats just a wee bit fast for me. I prefer the slower steps of the other latin dances such as mambo to salsa but do love latin dance and watching others salsa. It is a delightful music and dance.
