Dancing with the Stars Season 9 - The Biggest Ever!

Here is the story of the ninth season of Dancing with the Stars.

Catch up on the cast and the happenings from start to finish.  (Want the short version?)

For the latest on DWTS go to the main Dancing with the Stars lens.

Week 1 - The Men

The male half of the biggest cast yet opened season 9 of Dancing with the Stars. The practices behind them, they were eager to show their stuff on the dance floor. At least some of them were.

Some of the costumes were rather strange, a few of the professional dancers' seemed to have half their dresses missing and Tom Delay's flares were a sigh to behold.

The best were Aaron, Donny and Mark. The worst were Michael, Tom and Ashley. Ashley, particularly,didn't look comfortable, partly because of previous injuries and his height.

Each couple did a solo and took part in one of the "dance relays". The latter was a short Salsa or Waltz and they then handed off to the next couple. The best in each group got 10 points, second 9, third 6 and fourth 4.

The overall scores were:

Aaron and Karina - 32
Chuck and Anna - 22
Mark and Lacey - 29
Ashley and Edyta - 19
Donny and Kym - 30
Louie and Chelsie - 27
Michael and Anna - 19
Tom and Cheryl - 20

No one stood out as a solid favorite - I suspect the ladies will supply some better dancers!

The 70s are Back! And So Is Dancing With The Stars!

Week 1 - The Ladies

I had anticipated a clear distinction in the performances of the men and women. I had thought that the women seemed more talented and would show much more basic dance skills than the men. Turned out I was wrong!

It can be a shock sometime to actually see the stars dance for the first time. Kathy Ireland is a beautiful, intelligent and just plain nice person. She can't dance. Joanna Krupa is a beautiful, overbearing, aggressive person who charges $15 a month for membership of her website. She can dance.

The most intriguing performer was Macy Gray. She seemed to just not want to be there. And because of a European tour she wasn't able to practice much. Add the fact that she is awkward and heavy footed meant she was not going to give a good performance. But to me she was one of the true dancers. Yes, she wasn't very good at getting the steps right but she felt the music and could express herself to the music. Perhaps I'm being a little over poetic, but to me her performance was the best of the night.

The generally accepted best dance of the evening was Kelly Osbourne's. Louis van Amstel again showed he is one of the best choreographers on the planet designing a dance that was not too complicated but showed Kelly in her best light. Everyone had a tear in their eye.

The ones to watch for are Mya, Joanna and Natalie.

The one's that won't be there long are Macy (shame), Kathy and Debi.

Surprises from the ladies on Dancing with the Stars

Week 1 - The Results

The first results show of the season. Actually, I like to think of it more as a 60 minute long Disney commercial, but that's just me.

For completeness we had Sean Kingston, the cast of the Lion King, part of Miley Cyrus' new video (only part?), The "Losers" Club (Kenny Mayne, Penn Jillette, Jeffrey Ross) giving tips on how to handle being first voted off, Adam Carolla and a touching tribute to Patrick Swayze.

On the plus side we actually learned which man was voted off half way through the show. And it was, unsurprisingly, Ashley Hamilton.

Ashley has trouble moving, from some old motor bike accident injuries, but just didn't seem comfortable. A nice guy, who froze in the Mirror Ball headlights.

We discovered, at the end, that Macy Gray was the lady who would be trotting off in the first week. Fortunately, they didn't ask her to dance one last time. It's a shame, as I thought (and I was in the minority) that she showed great potential.

The format reverts to normal next week. Fourteen couples will dance on Monday, and one will leave on Tuesday.

No Surprises in Dancing with the Stars Results Show

The Week 1 Losers - Macy Gray & Jonathan Roberts and Ashley Hamilton & Edyta Sliwinska

Week 2 - The Dances

Two down already and one more will go this week!

As with previous seasons, the judging was harsher in week 2 (Baz Luhrman replaced Len this week and was an able stand-in) and more mistakes were made as there was less time to practice.

Mya, Aaron and Donny were very good and are the favorites.

There were 8 celebrities on 18, 19 or 20 points - anyone could go! It all depends on the viewer votes and it will be very interesting to see who is left at the end of the results show (assuming they are in a particular order!)

Kelly, Mark and Tom made significant errors and the first two would have scored more if they hadn't happened. Tom nearly dropped Cheryl!

In terms of dancing ability, Kathy seems to be most at risk, she is very stiff, but she does have fan support. Tom is just getting by, and seems to be really bothered by his foot - does he have enough votes?

Anyone could go in week 2 of Dancing with the Stars

Week 2 - The Results

The results show was a little more interesting this week as we had 14 contestants to get through. The entertainment was Joss Stone (fine singer), Selena Gomez (Derek and Karina danced wonderfully) and the USC Marching Band did a great job, although I think the sound might have been off in a few places.

The last four standing were Debi, Louie, Tom and Kathy. Tom was pronounced safe, then Louie, and then Kathy was told she was going home.

Kathy is a classy, wonderful woman who just couldn't seem to relax on the dance floor.

45% of our poll had Tom going home, 40% Kathy.

From a scoring perspective, it's worth noting that Tom must have had more viewer votes (obvious because he had the same judges' score!). I wonder how big his fan base is. It might not be Osmond-size, but he may well carry a sizable minority! The other thing of note is that Debi was in the final two - after getting 21 to Tom's 18! Quite a big difference!

A Close Thing, But No Surprises

Week 2 Losers - Kathy Ireland & Tony Dovolani

Week 3 - The Dances

The biggest thing about the night was how grumpy Len was (should Len leave?). Low scores, highly critical. He got lots of boos!

The stand out points were:

- Mya is so good - got 27, should have got more
- Natalie is getting better and better - I picked it first!
- Tom Delay can't go on with two fractured feet
- Michael Irvin ain't Jerry Rice
- Debi don't do dancin'

It'll be interesting who will leave!

Dancing with the Stars Week 3: Mya and Coughlin outdance their competitors

Week 3 - The Results

The worst secret in TV (at least on that day) was that Tom Delay was going to quit.

Well he was safe! But then he quit! He just couldn't carry on with two broken left feet. He promises to come back and do the Texas Two-step in the Finale.

The celebrities that were "in jeopardy" were Joanna, Debi, Aaron and Michael.

Joanna safe, Aaron safe...... and Debi Mazar was voted off week three of Dancing with the Stars season 9.

I was really rooting for Debi! I'm just not sure she was comfortable dancing in front of people!

Who was voted off in week 3 of Dancing with the Stars?

Week 3 Departures Tom Delay & Cheryl Burke and Debi Mazar & Maksim Chmerkovskiy

Week 4 - The Dances

Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough Week 4

Things were a lot lighter on the judging front - Len was less grumpy (although was still consistently a harder scorer than the other two judges - maybe he shouldn't leave!), there were four new dances to enjoy and a lot of potential mishaps to look forward to.

It was a night of numbers

Four new dances - Lamabada, Bolero, Charleston and Texas Two-Step (??)
Three standout performances. Mya (because she's better the other celebrities, and most of the professionals), Joanna (because Derek took his shirt off, and because there was a lot of crotch action) and Melissa. I was really pleased about Melissa's performance. Up to now I had been a little disappointed, I didn't think she was going to win, but I thought she would be better than she has. Well she nailed the Charleston, it really was a good fit for her bubbly personality!
Four guys in the basement - Michael (Bolero wasn't him), Chuck (he had great fun throwing Anna around, can't dance though), Louie (the judges really don't seem to like him) and surprisingly Aaron (Lambada).

It's pretty obviously that Joanna and Derek will be asked to perform again on the results show, and that a man is going home. Michael has had the lowest score consistently, but I'm not sure how many viewer votes Louie has, and this week they scored the same from the judges.

We shall see!

Here are the scores of the couples in week 4 of Season 9 of Dancing with the Stars:

Mark Dacascos & Lacey Schwimmer - 22
Michael Irvin & Anna Demidova - 16
Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson - 24
Aaron Carter & Karina Smirnoff - 18
Chuck Liddell & Anna Trebunskaya - 17
Louie Vito & Chelsie Hightower - 16
Melissa Joan Hart & Mark Ballas - 28
Mya & Dmitry Chaplin - 28
Natalie Coughlin & Alec Mazo - 24
Joanna Krupa & Derek Hough - 26
Kelly Osbourne & Louis Van Amstel - 23

Ladies Dominate in Week 4 of Dancing with the Stars

Week 4 - The Results

I just can't express my feelings about the results show. I really should stop watching it, it upsets me too much.

Anyway, the ladies were pretty dominant this week so all of them were safe.

The bottom two were Aaron and Chuck, and Chuck was sent home.

I was impressed at the way he applied himself - he can be fierce in all aspects of life!

DWTS Results Show is Full of Filler

Week 4 Losers - Chuck Liddell & Anna Trebunskaya

Week 5 - The Dances

Well, the only thing really messed up was Samantha Harris' hair. (It had a curly, bulky thing going on). The dancers all had scores over 20, and the minor errors didn't really factor in.

Donny Osmond received 29 for his performance - slightly generous, but still deserved.

Joanna had to dance with Maks (because Derek Hough had the flu), and despite early trepidation, seemed to get along fine with him. She scored 24 which seemed a little generous too.

Mark Ballas was also under the weather, and Anna Trebunskaya helped Melissa out for the day. She gave her some tips "from a woman's point of view", the main one being "Keep the girls up".

Overall, the judges were very nice this week, and no one messed up. Michael had the lowest score (despite using a nickel in his buttocks to correct his posture) but we know he was a strong viewer fan base. Louie and Natalie were one point ahead of him. He only needs 0.4 percentage points more, of the viewer votes, than one of those to to be safe.

Here are the scores of the couples in week 5 of Season 9 of Dancing with the Stars:

Mark Dacascos & Lacey Schwimmer - 26
Michael Irvin & Anna Demidova - 21
Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson - 29
Aaron Carter & Karina Smirnoff - 24
Louie Vito & Chelsie Hightower - 22
Melissa Joan Hart & Mark Ballas -23
Mya & Dmitry Chaplin - 27
Natalie Coughlin & Alec Mazo - 22
Joanna Krupa & Maksim Chmerkovskiy (replcing Derek for the week) - 24
Kelly Osbourne & Louis Van Amstel -24

Dancing with the Stars Week 5 is All About The Hair

Week 5 - The Results

Grammy-winning singer Nora Jones. A much anticipated tribute to Michael Jackson. A significant number of Jacksons in attendance. Ten celebrities to count down. It could still have fitted within 30 minutes.

Nora Jones was perfect as always, and the tribute to MJ was stunning. It came across more as a tribute to his music than his dancing, but it was impressive nevertheless.

There were four celebrities left at the end "in jeopardy". (Tom Bergeron mentioned they were going for the world record for how many times the phrase "in jeopardy" could be mentioned ion a telecast.) Melissa, Joanna, Aaron and Louie. Yes, Michael was safe yet again!

Then Joanna was safe, followed by Melissa. leaving the bottom two as Aaron (again) and Natalie.

And Natalie was going home (wrong week to have that sort of make-up on). Technically, Natalie was one of the best, but she always had trouble showing emotion in the dance. I actually had her as a dark horse! I think she was caught in the voting mechanism, she didn't deserve to go home at this point.

Michael, Aaron and Louie always seem to be in trouble - who will it be next week?

Another Dancing with the Stars Celebrity Sinks

Week 5 Losers - Natalie Coughlin & Alec Mazo

Week 6 - The Dances

This week two couples are going home, they have an individual dance and a competitive mambo, plus there is a dance off between the two couples with the second and third lowest points.

Simple isn't it?

Overall, the judges were slightly tougher this week but the scoring followed the general ranking it has before. Donny and Mya scored less that usual, Aaron slightly more, but the general ranking was the same.

The competitive Mambo served as a way to polarize the scores. All the couples dance at once and the judges knock them out one at a time. The first couple to go get 2 points, the second 3 up to the last couple dancing, who get 10 points.

This really defined the bottom four - Michael, Louie, Melissa and Kelly. The only other potentially in danger is Aaron, as he has been consistently in the bottom two lately.

The bottom couple leave and the next two dance off with routines of their choice. The judges decide the winner of the dance-off - not the viewers!

Here are the scores of the couples in week 6 of Season 9 of Dancing with the Stars:

Mark Dacascos & Lacey Schwimmer - 26 & 6 = 32
Michael Irvin & Anna Demidova - 20 & 2 = 22
Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson - 24 & 7 = 31
Aaron Carter & Karina Smirnoff - 25 & 8 = 33
Louie Vito & Chelsie Hightower - 21 & 3 = 24
Melissa Joan Hart & Mark Ballas -20 & 4 = 24
Mya & Dmitry Chaplin - 24 & 9 = 33
Joanna Krupa & Derek Hough - 26 & 10 = 36
Kelly Osbourne & Louis Van Amstel - 20 & 5 = 25

Four Stars May Be in Jeopardy on Dancing

Week 6 - The Results

A very busy show!

Taylor Swift, two eliminations and a dance off!

The bottom three couples were Michael/Anna, Louie/Chelsie and Melissa/Mark. No real surprise there. BUT Melissa had the lowest score! A bit of a surprise given her assumed fan base. Melissa put her all into it and overcame a lack of dancing ability to be competitive every week.

That left two couples who had to perform a 30 second routine of their choice. Then the judges would decide who they wanted to stay.

Bruno chose Louie, Len chose Michael and......Carrie-Ann also chose Michael so Louie and Chelsie were going home.

Louie's physical abilities and charm weren't enough to overcome his level of dancing ability.

Same elimination process next week, with Kelly and Michael being the obvious stars in peril, but with Aaron in the mix too.

Dancing with the Stars sends two couples home in week 6

Week 6 Retirees - Melissa Joan Hart & Mark Ballas and Louie Vito & Chelsie Hightower

Week 7 - The Dances

This week two couples are going home, they have an individual dance and a competitive team dance, plus there is a dance off between the two couples with the second and third lowest points.

Simple isn't it?

The standard of dancing was higher than last week apart from two couples.

Lacey Schwimmer had the flu and Mark danced with Anna Trebunskaya. Their lack of time together was reflected in their score of 19.

Mya and Dmitry again felt the wrath of Len Goodman and his distaste for their choreography. He gave them 7 compared to the nines from the other two judges.

The competitive group dance had Team Paso (Michael, Aaron, Mark and Mya) against Team Tango (Donny, Joanna and Kelly). Each team was scored out of 30 and the points added to each couples individual dance. Team Paso scored 24 while Team Tango had a massive 28. This had a strange effect on the overall scores. Last week the team dances polarized the scoring, this week it brought the scoring closer.

Here are the scores of the couples in week 7 of Season 9 of Dancing with the Stars:

* Mark Dacascos & Anna Trebunskaya (Lacey Schwimmer has the flu) - 19 & 24 = 43
* Michael Irvin & Anna Demidova - 23 & 24 = 47
* Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson - 24 & 28 = 52
* Aaron Carter & Karina Smirnoff - 29 & 24 = 53
* Mya & Dmitry Chaplin - 25 & 24 = 49
* Joanna Krupa & Derek Hough - 27 & 28 = 55
* Kelly Osbourne & Louis Van Amstel - 24 & 28 = 52

The bottom three are Mark, Michael and Mya! This is the first test for Mya's popularity with the voters and the results will give us a good idea as to who the favorites are.

Aaron Carter shines on Dancing with the Stars

Week 7 - The Results

I'm not a big fan of the results shows, but I really enjoyed this one.

The musical acts were quick but well done. We got through the countdown pretty quick. And the dance-off (which I hated initially) made it much more interesting. Plus Rod Stewart sang - that man is permanently stuck at age 40!

The couple with the lowest combined score were Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova. Michael was a little short on natural ability but he overcame that with hard work, application and a strong fan base.

The dance off was between Mark Dacascos & Lacey Schwimmer and Aaron Carter & Karina Smirnoff. This was a bit of a shock as Aaron had the highest individual score of 29! Obviously he has a weak fan base.

Although Mark did well the judges unanimously chose Aaron to stay and Mark went home. Mark had done well throughout and it was a shame to see him go.

Next week the couples dance twice and there is only one elimination.

Week 7 Losers on Dancing with the Stars

Week 7 Losers Michael Irvin & Anna Demidova and Mark Dacascos & Lacey Schwimmer

Week 8 - The Dances

After losing four couples in two weeks we are back to single elimination. Each couple had two dances - a ballroom and a latin...in the style of a decade allocated to them. Hmmm...

The judges were a little sweet and sticky this week, no big arguments and I felt they were a little soft on the contestants.

Mya dominated this week, scoring 29 and 30. The rest scored around the same, meaning it will be down to the viewers to decide who leaves.

Donny dressed up a little like Adam Ant, which had echoes of Marie's doll costume - and that didn't work out for her!

Here are the scores of the couples in week 8 of Season 9 of Dancing with the Stars:

* Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson - 26 & 24 = 50
* Aaron Carter & Karina Smirnoff - 23 & 27 = 50
* Mya & Dmitry Chaplin - 29 & 30 = 59
* Joanna Krupa & Derek Hough - 23 & 29 = 52
* Kelly Osbourne & Louis Van Amstel - 25 & 26 = 51

It doesn't look good for Aaron who has shown in previous weeks that he doesn't have a significant fan base. But who can tell?

Michael Buble and Susan Boyle will perform on the results show.

'Dancing' does time warp with themed dances

Week 8 - The Results

Two songs from Michael Buble, Sabrina Bryan dancing with Mark Ballas, a re-appearance by Kenny Mayne and Jerry Rice, and the much anticipated performance by Susan Boyle. It's a wonder they eliminated anyone!

When they did come to the end of the show, it was no surprise that Aaron Carter was leaving.

It was fairly evident that he didn't have a large fan base compared to the others, and he didn't have any advantage in the judges' scores.

It was a rocky appearance by Aaron - tears, anger, the odd tantrum and opening his mouth too much. BUT he definitely applied himself, never gave up and, as he said, "learned a lot of life-lessons".

Next week the semi-final!

Who went home in week 8 of Dancing with the Stars?

Week 8 Eliminees - Aaron Carter & Karina Smirnoff

Week 9 - The Dances

Well, the judges were quite perky this week, with Carrie Anne being a bigger bad guy than Len, who was pretty laid back.

The couples had to do three dances, the last being the (short) one they had prepared in case they were in the dance-off.

They all danced to the level you would expect apart from Donny. His Tango had a few missteps and errors and he and Kym only scored 21. He made up for it later.

Mya continued to demonstrate she is the best dancer and Joanna continued to rely on Derek and his choreography.

Kelly had her normal emotion-laden dance and clips.

Here are the scores

Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson - 21 & 26 & 27 = 74
Mya & Dmitry Chaplin - 28 & 30 & 29 = 87
Joanna Krupa & Derek Hough - 27 & 27 & 27 = 81
Kelly Osbourne & Louis Van Amstel - 24 & 27 & 27 = 78

On first glance Donny seem to have a lot to make up, but if you look at the split of the judges vote it's quite close with Donny getting 23.1%, Kelly 24.4%, Joanna 25.3% and Mya 27.2%. This means, for instance, Donny needs 1.4 percentage points of the viewers vote more than Kelly to be safe.

I think there is a chance of an upset this week!

Mya scores another perfect 10 on Dancing'

Week 9 - The Results

Lets' see. We have Alicia Keys, Leonna Lewis and the Bee Gees. I know! Let's do a crappy video to Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie! And do a couple of fake "who's safe"'s.

I really don't like the results show.

Anyway, Joanna and Derek went home. THE best final dance. Ever. Seriously. Maybe the best dance ever on the show.

Joanna was good. Not iiner good, but good. Derek was very good. Perhaps Donny or Kelly should have gon home, but I don't think Joanna would have won. Plus is was the best exit ever.

The final has Kelly, Mya and Donny. Mya is the best dancer, Donny the biggest star and Kelly...

The finalists on Dancing with the Stars

Left in Week 9 - Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough

The Finale - The Dances

The showman, the reality star and the dancer. Who will win the biggest dancing reality show of them all? It might not be the dancer...

Each couple had two individual dances and the "megamix". The "megamix" was a group routine where each had (more or less) the same steps. The final dance was freestyle.

Mya scored 30s in the paso doble and the group dance but only 27 in the freestyle. Shock!

Kelly didn't raise her game but she danced well. 26,26 and 24 were her scores.

Donny was competent in his cha cha, came second in the group dance and scored a perfect 30 in the freestyle - showing us he really is an entertainer.

Here is a summary of the scores:

Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson - 27 & 28* & 30 = 85
Mya & Dmitry Chaplin - 30 & 30* & 27 = 87
Kelly Osbourne & Louis Van Amstel - 26 & 26* & 24 = 76
* "megamix"

These mean that Donny needs 0.8 percentage points more than Mya in the viewer vote to win (assuming Kelly will be placed third).

It comes down to the best dancer versus the most popular star...

Mya? Donny? Kelly? Who will win 'Dancing'?

Previous weeks

The Finale - The results

I'll leave out the first hour and 52 minutes, suffice it to say it had lots of little segments, some of which were quite good, and some were cringe-worthy.

After Tom Bergeron announce that Kelly was third, he then hung on for another five minutes (it seemed like hours) to say that Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson were the winners of the mirror-ball trophy in season 9 of Dancing with the Stars.

Donny was not the best dancer but he a) obviously had the fan base and b) brought it on when it counted. Getting his first 30 in the final and dancing at his best. Mya was a beautiful dancer, technically excellant but just couldn't get the votes to beat an American institution - Osmond Nation.

I'm glad for Kym Johnson who has had her share of bad dancers, and was obviously over the moon when she won.

Congratulations Donny and Kym.

And the 'Dancing With the Stars' winner is ... - Dancing With the Stars

Third Place: Kelly Osbourne & Louis van Amstel

Second Place - Mya & Dmitry Chaplin
