Dangers Of Soy Products

Is soy a food product with health risks?

Soy based products bounced onto grocery store shelves in a blaze of excitement. Banners, magazine articles, and newscasts touted soy's amazing health benefits and encouraged consumers to consume it as a healthy protein food choice. But are soy products really as safe as they say they are? Do you know the health risks that you expose yourself to when you consume these foods?

Soy is found in many of the commercially prepared foods that you purchase yet you may not be aware of the danger of consuming these soy based products?

Are we playing with our children's food source?

Is Soy really a safe food choice for your family?

Soy milk is often recommended as a healthy alternative to feed your baby. Soy formula and soy milk products are offered as a safe food choice for newborn infants and children...but are these food products really safe?

When soy milk hit the store shelves there was not sufficient study done to back up the claims being made on the health benefits, or risks, of Soy products. So how is a person to know the health risks which they may be exposing their children to by offering them a diet rich in soy based products?

You were probably told that Soy is a healthier protein alternative but did they also tell you that Soy contains estrogen like compounds, and that although it is a natural product, that this product should not be consumed on a regular basis?

Did they tell you that these estrogen like compounds could affect the sexual development of your child?

What They Don't Tell You About Soy Based Products...

What you were probably not told is that a diet rich in soy products could actually be very dangerous to those who consume it on a regular basis. Perhaps even more so to the young developing children who consume it.

What the sellers of soy will not tell you is that studies of Soya based products has found some frightening health consequences for those individuals who consumed even as little as one serving of Soy every second day.

Do you know that Isoflavones are a primary ingredient of Soy and that it is these Isoflavones which may be the possible reason as to the majority of health problems associated with the consumption of Soy based products. Isoflavones very closely resemble female hormones, or Estrogen, and we are feeding this compound to women, children, and men.

The manufacturers and distributors of Soy based products forgot to mention that medical studies now show that men who dine on a single serving of Soy every second day have dramatically reduced sperm counts compared to men who do not eat Soy products. The also do not tell you that the men who ate Soy during these studies had approximately forty one million less sperm per milliliter of semen than those who did not consume Soy products during the study.

The results of this study into the effects of regular soy consumption suggested that it is inadvisable for males to eat Soy products on a regular basis. So why are people still being told that soy milk is fine to bottle feed our babies? What is this over feeding of soy milk products doing to the young developing male children who are bottle fed this stuff? What is it doing to your baby daughters? What is it doing to our sons?

Why were consumers not told about the possible health risks when studies started showing that there just might be a few problems with consuming Soy products on a regular basis? Why is it still being recommended that we feed soy milk to our young children? Research studies are now concluding that it is not healthy for men, children, or women, to consume soy based products on a regular basis.

Are we playing with our health by eating a food we should not?

Could Soy Be Contributing To The Current High Rates Of Alzheimers?

Did you know that studies are suggesting that there appears to be a higher incidence of Alzheimer's in individuals who consume Soy based products on a regular basis.

The Isoflavones goitrogens may reduce your body's ability to absorb iron and other essential nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and zinc. These vitamin deficiencies can cause an increased risk of brain atrophy, reduce your thyroids ability to function, or cause other health related issues to occur.

A regular intake of Soy products may also affect your thyroid functioning and Soy products are suspected as being one of the factors responsible for inflammatory based thyroid illness.

What are the effect of soy milk isoflavones on children...

While so many companies and individual distributors still shout out the many presumed health benefits of Soy based products, they neglect to mention that when we feed our young babies and children soy based formulas or soy milk products that we are exposing them to approximately thirty-two to forty-five milligrams of the Isoflavone known as genistein.

If only a much smaller amount of this chemical is needed to affect a grown woman's menstrual cycle then what is the soy that we are feeding to our children doing to them? Do we know what the hormonal effects of feeding soy to our young babies and growing children is? What about the hormonal changes that expectant mothers who consume soy products may pass on to their developing fetus?

Do you know that studies are finding that Genistein may inhibit the growth of intestinal cells within babies who consume these Soy based formulas? Twice as many children who were fed a Soy based formula develop diabetes compared to those in a control group who were breast fed, or received a milk based formula, instead.

Does anyone know what the statistics of children with peanut allergies who were fed Soy milk products as babies are? Is there a link between nut allergies and soy consumption?

The Bad Effects Of Soy That They Aren't Telling You About...

Do the manufacturers and distributors of soy products mention that it is now advised that women with a history of breast cancer should be very careful when consuming Soy products.

Do you know that women who take the anti-cancer drug tamoxifen should completely eliminate Soy based products from their diet as Soy may reduce the effectiveness of this drug.

Why are consumers still not being warned about the possible adverse health effects of consuming soy containing food products?

Research Soy Based Products Before You Feed Them To Your Family...

Even with statistical evidence mounting as to the possible adverse health affects of a diet rich in Soy based products more and more companies are jumping onto the soy band wagon.

There are increasingly more foods contain soy appearing on store shelves proving that the commercial marketing arena for Soy products is indeed a very large and powerful industry. Many of these foods are products which our children casually consume each day. Mayonnaise, salad dressings, and chocolate are just a few of the products were generally include soy in them.

I am sure that in the future we will be seeing a great deal more on research into soy, and thankfully we will probably also be receiving much more accurate information as to it's true health benefits, and risks. Until that information is available please research the foods which you choose for your family. Do your own research into soy products and their possible health hazards.

Don't risk your child's health on a product that we know so very little about. Do your own research before you feed your child a soy based diet.

Walk right past that soy flour, soymilk, tofu, soy oil, tempeh, miso, soy baby formula, soy meats, soy cheese, soy ice cream, or any other food item that may contain soy flour, soy lethicin or any other soy based ingredient. Avoid, or boycott food products which may not be good for your family's health, avoid the foods which contain soy. Purchase healthier milk and protein options instead....

I was doing soy for a while, to cut down on cholesterol. Now I use almond milk instead -- it's also easier to digest.

I WAS pro-soy before reading this lens (which I need to come back to for more details.) I chose soy because I'm lactose intolerant (and also allergic to Almond Milk). Hazelnut Milk and Oat Milk are tasty options but quite expensive! Soy was an economical choice that doesn't taste bad (sugar added). But if not soy, and not cow milk, and the nut milks are rather expensive ... ARE there any more options? Or do I just change my budget to fit-inHazelnut and-or Oat Milk?

I have had an intolerance for soy ever since I was in my early twenties. I don't know if it was because of the fact that most soy on the market is genetically modified, or if was just one of those things, but a short time later I developed Crohn's Disease. I can't eat out because soy is in just about everything, and the Crohn's makes it even more difficult. Thank goodness for ground flax seed, because that is the only thing that I've found to keep my Crohn's under control.
I blame the soy, and these companies that genetically modify foods. Leave nature alone, she knows what she is doing.

I wasn't aware of the health risks, but when my daughter was born she was breast fed for 3 months, at that point I was really sick and feeding her breast milk was no longer an option. I tried dairy formula and found out she was allergic. Soy milk was the only thing she could keep down. She was fed soy based formula for months. What long term affects could this have on her? She is 12 years old now and healthy as can be....and no longer allergic to dairy though as a family we just don't consume much.

I remember when soy just started to become popular back in the 60's. Before jumping on to the band wagon I started to read more about the "groups" and government agencies who were pushing it out there as a health type product. Many of the groups were pharma type companies who were doing cancer research and research on hormonal effects on the body. Somehow something clicked in my brain and when I put 2 & 2 together, I thought - they are trying to get us sick just so they can sell us medications down the line.
I know many people think that soy is the perfect food but with its high estrogen level and seeing children hit puberty at such a young age you have to stand back and think it over a bit.
Although I'll admit I do eat too much junk type food and do eat some other products that I know are not healthy for you so I am no means a fanatic when it comes to healthy eating but I do what I can to avoid soy - I just scares me.

I'm very educated about soy because I'm allergic to soy. My allergist told me that soy is a legume (just like peanuts). He said that soy is actually a more common allergy than peanuts, but people are just misinformed and many are going undiagnosed. The soy allergy can cause symptoms very similar to irritable bowel syndrome and I think it's no coincidence that the increase of IBS cases occurred when we started going crazy with putting soy in our food. It's in everything from saltine crackers to Campbell's soup. You did a great job here educated the public.

Great lens! I didn't learn about the downsides of soy until I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I was a big consumer of soy products back then. But I found out that soy interferes with my thyroid meds in a big way. It's almost like not taking them if I consume too much soy and my TSH tests proved it. • RolandTumble Dec 18, 2008 @ 6:24 pm | delete
While it's probably a good idea to cut out--or at least sharply reduce--one's consumption of commercially overprocessed soya, the lack of rampant levels of these reported problems in traditional Asian communities tends to argue that basic forms such as tofu, tempeh and edamame are at least realtively safe (and they're too good to cut out entirely...).

    Nice lens, though.
  • Ronnie L. Apr 8, 2011 @ 7:16 pm | delete
Asian don't eat any of the three fermented forms of soy on a day to day basis, multiple times a day like we do in the United States, especially the tofu and the edamame. Interestingly, tofu was a part of the process usually thrown out. I agree with the Lady, and real unslanted research bears this out: Though certain entities would have you believe more is better, like 60 mg all the way to 200 mg is best of soy protein, people aren't on those levels very long before serious health issues, like hyperthyroidism make themselves known. In 'Asian countries', when a study was done, their consumption of "all legumes" (so that the number would be even higher), their consumption on a daily basis was still only .08 mg per day. They just don't eat soy eat day. If you are like everyone else, if you eat out, boom, on average like 5 hits of soy in one meal....soybean oil, soy lecithin, the mysterious 'natural flavoring' and 'chicken broth'...not to name names, like they are the only ones, but as of today April 8th, Taco Bell, Popeyes, MacDonald's, Chic Filet, Burger King...all all uses of the (cheap in cost) soy product. TVP (Texturized vegetable protein), HVP (Hydrolyzed [anything with that word]Vegetable Protein), and the oh so healthy sounding Vegetable Oil (usually at least 50% Soybean Oil - never seen an exception, but there just must be "one" out there somewhere....)....Sorry, I was having SO MANY issues, and now, as I cut more an more soy out, I find more and more "hidden" sources....oh yeah, mono- and diglycerides...sorry mermaid, am I bad for naming so many names at once??

It's just so frustrating. I hear and see so many people saying: I have a gluten allergy, or I'm allergic to chocolate, or is it the soybean product in each?? I recently read that innocent whet flour with Malted Barley Flour in it has a soy component! If they aren't going to admit to the soy, how are you supposed to know - why wouldn't one assume that they had a gluten allergy? I have some found some chocolate made with just cocoa mass and sugar, but you have to look around - as of today, Michel Cluizel 60% with cocoa nibs and Rogue Chocolatier, a brand called....NOTHING AT THE REGULAR GROCERY STORE....and this is how people get misled, unless they are blessed to live by an actual bakery. HEy maybe I'm wrong, but it has taken me years of eliminating foods to come to this point, eliminating white sugar for a time I was so convinced, and corn[the High Fructose Corn Syrup(HFC) was really rough to get rid of at the time, potatoes, carrots all had to go I was SO worried about the sugar. I thought I had all these allergies, now it turns out it was really just one - soy and soy derivatives - how do I know? My symptoms calmed down to almost nothing and I ate the supposedly evil food and....nothing happened! No foggy brain! No trouble waking up! No fatigue....the aches and pains went away... Thank you for giving me a chance to express my dismay/angst...abilities that I THOUGHT were gone forever came back- did I mention the anxiety and depression for years on end that just faded away(!?) memory is just there, my ability to multitask like before is slowly coming back....
  • CleanerLife Nov 18, 2008 @ 12:07 pm | delete
I was convinced soy, and soya based products were healthy, until I read stuff like this:

"Before the first world war, only a very few soya beans were crushed. The Americans had begun experimenting with using the protein meal as animal feed, but farmers were reluctant to take it up because it was indigestible to chicken and pigs.... It was mainly used in soaps because it was considered unpalatable.." - http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/2006/jul/25/food.foodanddrink

This information is out there, but it's buried by the commercial hype. It also seems like most of this information is on "soya" and Americans don't hear about it, or don't understand it because we use the word soy instead of soya.

Dang it! I still have a pint of soy chocolate faux ice cream in the freezer I was JUST thinking about...
I look forward to reviewing your references!

I knew there was a reason I didn't like soya products! Excellent lens and very informative! Thanks for joining the Squidoo All Stars Group

Let Your Endorphins Out To Play

When you participate in pleasurable activities like smiling, laughing, exercising or playing, your brain does an amazing thing and releases a little chemical message known as an endorphin.

These endorphins are feel good messages that have the power to actually remove physical and emotional pain. They travel down the spine, and then throughout your body, sending a feeling of well being as they go. These endorphins not only have the ability to relieve pain but they also have the power to make you feel happy. So remember to take time to play - It really is important.
