Daniel Silva Books In Order

The Chronological Order For Daniel Silva Books

If you're a Daniel Silva fan, then you will probably want to read all Daniel Silva books in order. Why? Because except for one stand-alone novel, the rest of the books is a series following Gabriel Allon, the main character (and loved hero) of his books. In fact there are two main characters across Daniel Silva's novels, which might make it all the more confusing if you picked one of the books at random.

There is Gabriel Allon, and there is Michael Osbourne. And then there is a stand-alone spy thriller that has nothing to do with the rest of his books. Confusing, isn't it?

So here you will find the correct list of Daniel Silva books in chronological order, so that you know which book to read next, no matter where you are in the series. Also I'll give you a brief overview and review of the books (no major spoilers, I promise!) in case you do want to get a general idea on what the fuss is all about.

Reading the books in order

You don't have to read the books in order, but it's definitely helpful, especially with the Gabriel Allon series. While each book has its own plot, there are references to past happenings and events which make it easier to understand what's going on.

The Gabriel Allon Series

The Kill Artist (Gabriel Allon #1)

The Kill Artist

Amazon Price: $4.98 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

This is the first book in the Gabriel Allon series, and it's the very book that hooked me up on the rest. Gabriel Allon is a former assassin for Israel's MOSAD, and here he is retired after his wife and son have been mercilessly killed. Of course, as it is expected, his retired life doesn't last long since he is asked to hunt down Tariq, who was in fact the very one responsible for killing his family. Of course, Gabriel can't say no to such a request...

The English Assassin (Gabriel Allon #2)

The English Assassin

Amazon Price: $5.28 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

After his previous adventure came to a conclusion, Gabriel Allon goes back to his new pastime as an art restorer. However this relatively peaceful time doesn't last long when he's now requested to enter yet again the active life of his former 'past time'. This book is about Nazis, about Swiss covers-ups, Israelis, all which make the perfect ingredients for another great adventure spy thriller.

The Confessor (Gabriel Allon #3)

The Confessor (Gabriel Allon Novels)

Amazon Price: $5.43 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

The book starts a big slowly, but it soon picks up its pace. Well worth keeping at it. Here the story continues a couple of years after what happened in The English Assassin. His new job now? To investigate the death of Benjamin Stern, his former colleague (spy) and friend. Another roller coaster that you won't be able to put down any time soon.

A Death in Vienna (Gabriel Allon #4)

A Death in Vienna (Gabriel Allon, Bk 4)

Amazon Price: $4.74 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

The fourth book in the Gabriel Allon series, this was published a year after the previous one (it seems each year Daniel Silva published one book - I wish he published more often!).

Gabriel Allon is once again pulled out from his peaceful life of an art restorer, this time to investigate a bombing of the Vienna Office of Wartime Claims and Inquiries. This story takes us from Vienna to Israel, Italy, Argentina, the US, and back to Vienna. If reading about the Holocaust, Nazis and the hunt for them is to your liking, you'll greatly enjoy this book!

Prince of Fire (Gabriel Allon #5)

Prince of Fire (Gabriel Allon Novels)

Amazon Price: $5.25 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

Things are looking up for the ex-spy Gabriel Allon. Now we find him settled down in Venice with his beautiful partner Chiara whom he intends to marry soon. Some time has passed since his previous family was killed, and now he is ready to take the leap again. Of course Daniel is pulled back into the world of spying, intrigue and terrorism in order to find those responsible for the bombings of the Israeli Embassy in Rome.

Fast paced book, great for all Daniel Silva fans!

The Messenger (Gabriel Allon #6)

The Messenger (Gabriel Allon Novels)

Amazon Price: $4.50 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

This book takes us on a trail of Al-Qaeda members and it's a really fast pace one. I enjoyed reading this one in the series. It's very contemporary and we can identify with many social, political, economical and military issues our society is facing today.

The Secret Servant (Gabriel Allon #7)

The Secret Servant (Gabriel Allon)

Amazon Price: $2.46 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

#7 in the Daniel Allon series, this book focuses on Islam terrorism once again. Sent to Amsterdam on a seemingly routine mission to clean up after an assassinated undercover agent, Allon unwittingly uncovers an Al Qaeda-like plot that sets in motion a series of events which involves him trying to eliminate the terrorists plans. It is a fast paced and suspenseful thriller that I think you will enjoy.

Moscow Rules (Gabriel Allon #8)

Moscow Rules (Gabriel Allon)

Amazon Price: $2.45 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

In this 8th book of the Gabriel Allon series, the main hero is in fact on his honeymoon, which of course will have to be cancelled, due to some serious threats to a much-oppressed Russian press guy who wants to give Gabriel sensitive information that he doesn't want to reveal to anyone else. The problems start when the journalist is murdered and Gabriel is once again thrown deep in a very dangerous plot. A fast pacing book that you just can't miss!

The Defector (Gabriel Allon #9)

The Defector (Gabriel Allon Novels)

Amazon Price: $2.92 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

The reluctant hero, Gabriel Allon is once again pulled out of his easy life with his wife and his passion for restoring art objects. If you've read Moscow Rules, this book is in fact its sequel, so in this case it's really worth reading them in chronological order to make sense of it all.

Personally I did like better Moscow Rules, however overall it was an enjoyable novel in Daniel Silva's already popular fast paced style.

The Rembrandt Affair (Gabriel Allon #10)

The Rembrandt Affair (Gabriel Allon Series)

Amazon Price: $149.97 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

This book is all about art (one of my favorite mystery novel types is related to art theft and its recovery). In this book Gabriel Allon is hunting for a lost Rembrandt piece, and for once the plot is a bit less urgent than in the previous novels. This can be a good thing if you're getting tired of action, action and only action. Daniel Silva's meditation on the economics of art in a time of financial distress is refreshing and makes for an interesting read.

Portrait of a Spy (Gabriel Allon #11)

Portrait of a Spy (Gabriel Allon)

Amazon Price: $4.93 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

This is the latest published novel by Daniel Silva in his extremely popular Gabriel Allon series. Published in 2011, I've seen a new paperback edition released in February 2012, so you might want to get that version if you find it cheaper.

In this book you will recognize some of the favorite characters, such as Chia, his new wife with whom Gabriel "tries" to retire in England to spend his time restoring art (like that's gonna happen any time soon!), his former boss who keeps dragging him back to action, Ari Shamron, and his team of course. Here he is now fighting against the Yemeni based terrorist cell, which makes for a very engaging and suspenseful read.

The Michael Osbourne Books

The Mark of the Assassin (Michael Osbourne #1)

The Mark of the Assassin

Amazon Price: $5.59 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

Personally I like Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon books, however if you like overall his writing style, chance are you'll enjoy this book as well. Michael Osbourne, is a senior CIA spy who has to solve the case of a body found when a commercial jetliner is blown out of the skies over Long Island.

It has the usual fast paced action, suspense and engaging read. My gripe is that somehow Michael has less depth of characters than Gabriel, but that could also be because we've read many more books with Gabriel, so we got to know him quite well. I can imagine this book to be easily turned into a Hollywood movie (if it hasn't been already done).

The Marching Season (Michael Osbourne #2)

The Marching Season

Amazon Price: $4.45 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

This is the second (and so far last) book in the Michael Osbourne series, and here our CIA spy has to investigate a new Irish terrorist group as well as protect his father in law who has taken a position as the USA's ambassador to the Court of St. James. Quite the cookie-cutter novel that reminds us so much of Le Carre, Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum. Worth reading, nevertheless, you won't get bored with it.

His Stand Alone Novel

The Unlikely Spy

The Unlikely Spy

Amazon Price: $5.58 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

The Unlikely Spy is the only stand-alone novel by Daniel Silva, as well as being his very first one published. When you read the Daniel Silva books in order, you can read this one at any time, because the plot is focused on other people that have nothing to do with Gabriel Allon or Michael Osbourne.

If you like Ken Follett, you will love this book. The plot of the book is very detailed, and there are interesting puzzles within puzzles, and plots within plots.

I really wish Daniel Silva had written a few more standalone novels, as he's extremely good at it.

I'm not so fond of spy thrillers (usually I seem to be on a different side than the author) but I did read Moscow Rules. And I'm obsessive about reading books in order
