My Search For Early America Pioneers (The Real Daniel Boone Found)

: I ran into the name of Daniel Boon when I was researching Abraham Lincoln's family roots in Virginia and North Carolina. Of course like most Americans growing up have seen TV and movie depictions of Daniel Boone. But for me this connection between family history of Abraham Lincoln two generation earlier to Daniel Boone, the scout and guide to early pioneers seeking the promised land beyond the Allegheny was rather intriguing .

Daniel Boone was a contemporary of George Washington. Both same age, but each existed in a different world.of that era Their path may have crossed a few times, but history does not record such events clearly. Such was not really that important perhaps.

What is recorded is the disasterous defeat of the English in 1755, in the hands of French and their Native American allies, known as the "Braddock Expedition". This was an effort to capture a strategic French Fort Duquesne (modern-day downtown Pittsburgh).

What is known from history is that Daniel Boone had served as a wagon driver in this expedition and learned the lesson of how not to fight the Native Americans from this experience.

George Washington, then an young officer of the Virginia Militia got his millitary training in "follow up" expeditions to Fort Duquesne and there he established his reputation as a brave and skilled millitary leader. The path of Daniel Boone and George Washington may have met at the edge of such millitary expeditions. The recorded hisory is not very clear as far as I have been able to find so far.

What is clear however is the connection of Daniel Boone to the family heritage of Abraham Lincoln. Boone was a near contemporary of President Lincoln's grand father, Abraham Lincon, on whose honor this President was named. Abraham Lincoln is certainly one of the most admired Presidents of America from then to now.

Daniel Boone, One Generation Before President Abraham Linconln

They both had roots in the same Quaker Communities in Pennsylvania, North Carolina & Virginia

type=textIn fact, what I found, as valuable background is that Col Abraham Lincoln, was born and grew up in the same Quaker community at Burke County, PA as did Daniel Boone and his family in the early years till the age of 16.

In fact, Col Abraham Lincoln learnd the trade of animal skin tanning from Daniel Boone's Uncle John, The same man who taught Daniel about such skills that forged his livelyhood as a frontiersman guide for piorneers , and as a hunter in the western frontier beyond the Appalachian in Kentucky and Ohio.

When Daniel was 16, his father moved the family to North Carolina, among the Quaker community in the Yadkin River Valley in the western part of the state. Apparently, President Abraham Lincoln's mother, came from the same N.C. Quaker commuity.

Daniel Boone lived to his 80s's. Boone contemporary George Washington died in 1799.

In that time frame, Nancy Hanks, mother of President Lincoln was just 10 years old. At this time, that Nancy Hanks became an orphan and moved to Virginia to live with her married aunt's family, Mrs. Richard Berry. Mrs. Berry's maiden name was Shipley, same as Nancy Hanks' mother, Nancy Shipley Berry., Mr. and Mrs. Richard Berry lived in a village called Beachland, Ky, near Springfield, in Washington County, Ky.

So this is the background that is helpful to understand the role of real Daniel Boone, the legendary frontierman who loved the American wilderness. And he loved nature from a spiritual side inherited partly from his family and community background. . Boone was not a highly educated person, but a man guided by the natural world of the wilderness and his own heritage rooted in the Quaker community of Burke County, PA.

To Daniel's mother, Sarah, he owed his religious nature. The religious conviction which served the pioneer all his life is poignantly and simply expressed in a letter to his sister-in-law written in his seventy-second year. ***

"I am as ignerant as a Child all the Religan I have to Love and fear God believe in Jesus Christ Dowall the good to my Neighbors and my Self that I can and Do as Little harm as I can help and trust in God's mercy for Rest."
