The New James Bond Debate

"Daniel Craig IS James Bond"

There has been many a debate on who is the best James Bond with the winner usually being Sean Connery. Connery wins because he was the first James Bond so no matter how many James Bonds there are they will always be compared to Sean Connery.

Our current James Bond is Daniel Craig he may not be the best James Bond but he is not the worst. The worst James Bond was of course George Lazenby but it was not totally his fault. The film format for 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' was the thing that killed the film.

Having said all this a film is the sum of its total parts, the story, the directing, the producing and last but not least the actors. When people see 'A George Lucas Film' or 'A Peter Jackson Film' etc, they think wow that must be good lets go see it. This is all because they know the format of the film, the directing, the locations all will be exceptional. Now you know all this you should now realise the curse of the James Bond films, when they change the actor they change the format. They change how Bond acts, etc, etc. The actor does of course bring something to this entire equation, things like how popular the actor is, his look, his personality, etc.

Every Bond actor brings something different to the role, Daniel Craig brings a rough and ready attitude that is grittier than the previous Bonds and he gets a big advantage over the other Bonds as Casino Royale is Bond's first mission as a 00 operative. His attitude in the film is one of a no nonsence go-getter which in my opinion he pulled of perfectly.

We are now on the eve of the second Daniel Craig James Bond film entitled 'Quantum of Solace' (titled from an obscure short story by Ian Fleming). The filmmakers have the chance to chisel Daniel Craig's interpretation of James Bond even further. Let's hope they make a good job of it.

Positive

paperfacets says:

Yep, I liked him. I wish the writers would make him a little more accessible. A bit less mystery to make Bond more likable would help his character.

Carlee Carter says:

Daniel Craig is probably the most believable of all the 007 movies and I would know being 60years old and having seen every Bond movie that has ever been made. The body type is strong enough to be able to do the running, jumping, flying through the sky a spy would need to do, plus he is young enough to attract the women ,young and old! Yes I would say Daniel Craig is the perfect spy! Bond ,James Bond!

Ashley says:

Daniel Craig, James Bond, are the actual first James Bond I've actually seen. But i do like him and think he makes a great James bond. I've seen half of a James bond movie when pierce b. played him, he didn't really catch my attention. i like Daniel Craig.

Caleb Mabry says:

Best Bond ever. Plain and simple. He's the closest to what Ian Fleming depicted Bond as in the novels, and after all, that's what it all comes down to, how you relate to the novels.

PaulaFarris says:

I think your lens title says it all, "Daniel Craig IS James Bond." He has the look, the attitude, and the grit to do a lot with this character.

I used to think Roger Moore was the best (Unusual, I know!), but Daniel Craig has won the top spot. Great choice!

Negative

007 fanatic says:

P.S. When I first saw the advertisement for Quantum of Solace, I didn't even know it was a Bond flick.

007 fanatic says:

Seriously??? How can anyone say Craig is the best James Bond?? The majority of people who say this admit they have never seen any of the other Bond films. So how can you say that???? He doesn't do the one-liners for one. Second, he doesn't even resemble Flemming's interpretation. People say Craig reinvented Bond. Why tamper with perfection??? Bond does not need to be reinvented. If I want to go see a different kind of secret agent movie, I'll watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith, or The Bourne Trilogy, or even the Mission Impossible series. But when I watch Bond, I want to watch Bond. Craig is not Bond. Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan are James Bonds. So before you say you like Daniel Craig as Bond, watch the earlier stuff and compare. You will find he doesn't even come close to these men. You may like Craig as an action star, or even just an actor, but he is not Bond. Actually, if you would watch a Bond documentary, you will find that Roger Moore was considered the closest to Flemmings character. Craig is nothing like Roger Moore.

Mr-Salesmanship says:

Daniel Craig plays a good James Bond but I have to vote in the negative ... because ...

Mainly I think the writers have changed James Bond too much from Ian Fleming's interpretation. You only have to watch Sean Connery's James Bond to see how much he has changed. Quantum of Solace has got to be the worst Bond film ever, not because of Daniel Craig but because of the weak villians and the terrible action sequences which were so badly shot that you couldn't tell what was happening.

Bring back the gadgets, the witty one liners and everything else that made Bond who he was. Daniel Craig could be the best bond ever if he was supported by good writers and good action sequence choreographers and of course a good director.

Casino Royale was the title of the very first James Bond novel written by the legendary Ian Fleming. It is also the first outing for Daniel Craig as James Bond and the second time this film has been made. The first Casino Royale movie was a spoof and an unofficial James Bond movie starring the late great David Niven.

This second Casino Royale movie is a must see for any James Bond fan. It is the 21st in the series and the 23rd James Bond movie (the two unofficial movies being the first Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again which was a remake of Thunderball).

Quantum of Solace Interactive Review

My Mini Review First - Then It's Time To Add Your Thoughts

Quantum of Solace is Daniel Criag's second outing as Bond. Daniel Craig's gritty Bond is very well played and is very believable as the type of person you would expect Bond to be.

In my opinion though this film suffers from the same bad directing that On Her Majesty's Secret Service did. The action scenes while being good are very bad on the eyes with the camera flicking from angle to angle making it very hard to tell what is going on and to such an extent that I fear for Daniel Craig's career as Bond.

This film also strays from a lot of the concepts that made Bond what it is today, there was no 'Q' scene, no witty one liners and there was no "Bond, James Bond" bit. Sometimes it is fine to stray from tradition, unfortunately in my opinion now is not the time.

What are your views on the film 'Quantum of Solace'

Good

christopherwell says:

I liked it a lot. I know that some longtime Bond fans are disappointed that this is not the full-deal Bond that they remember ... but, then, this is still the beginning of his journey. (This film, in fact, is still wrapping up the business of the very first film in the new series.)

Bad

PaulaFarris says:

Hmmm . . . Hard to say, really. I liked Daniel Craig's performance--strong, impenetrable, unstoppable.

But where was the charm? I missed the classic, "Bond, James Bond," and "Martini, shaken, not stirred." I think the film worked very well without the witty one-liners, though. I think Craig's interpretation of the Bond character makes the sarcasm unnecessary.

The storyline however . . . well, I'll have to watch it a few more times to follow all of it. I have the basic idea, but there was a lot going on and I don't think that I've properly linked all the characters together yet.

I do have to say though, in a movie that is less than two hours long does it REALLY need 4 chase scenes?!? I think what the writers, directors, and producers lacked in plot and character development they tried to make up for in jerky camera movement and sweat, and dirt. Not impressive.

Since you don't have a neutral choice I'll have to go with bad. But I'm looking forward to watching the hour or so of the movie without chase scenes on DVD.

Quantum of Solace Movie Poster

Quantum of Solace Video Game

Both Casino Royale and Quatum of Solace movies have been combined into the excellent video game 'Quantum of Solace'. The game is designed using the Call of Duty engine and as such is shooter with both online and offline modes. The offline mode follows the story of the film Quantum of Solace and part way through one of the characters asks how he got to where he is now so it does a backflash to include the Casino Royale story. The online is much like every other shooter game with deathmatch and capture the flag type modes.

Overall the Quantum of Solace game is fairly easy with easy achievements on both the XBox360 and Playstation 3. It is also one of The Easiest Playstation 3 Trophy Games.
