About Sir Daniel Gooch

Daniel Gooch was only twenty-one when he was selected by Isambard Kingdom Brunel as Chief Locomotive officer of the Great Western Railway.

Even at that age, he had already been working on steam engines for George Stephenson for several years. In his new role he would design new engines, manage broad gauge and save the company from near bankruptcy. He would also lay the first transatlantic cable using Brunel's Great Eastern, long after his friend's untimely death.

Three reasons to love Daniel Gooch

1) He designed all the early Broad Gauge engines

2) As Chairman of the Great Western Railway he oversaw its expansion, the Severn Tunnel and the great days of broad gauge.

3) As chairman of the Telegraph Construction Company he oversaw laying of the first telegraph cable between the US and UK.
