Who is Daphne Du Maurier

Daphne du Maurier - Writer, Playwright, Recluse

Daphne Du Maurier (1907 - 1989) wrote some of the most famous books of the 20th Century including Rebecca, Frenchman's Creek and Jamaica Inn. Born into a famous family and daughter of the actor, Gerald du Maurier, Daphne grew up surrounded by stars. She achieved fame as a published author in her twenties and went on to write a series of bestselling novels, which were also adapted for film and stage. Notoriously reclusive, she moved to Cornwall after the death of her husband, Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick "Boy" Browning where she wrote The House on the Strand.

Although Daphne du Maurier was never credited with literary talent, she achieved continuous success as an author and I believe that many of her stories are under-valued. Her ability to draw out the sinister is evident in many of her books, especially Rebecca and The House on the Strand. She was also a curious writer, exploring both science-fiction and psychology in her short stories. This lens celebrates her work and life.

The House on the Strand

The House on the Strand is my favourite Daphne du Maurier novel because it combines history, science fiction while retaining the slightly sinister tone that overshadows all of du Maurier's books. It tells the story of Dick Young who goes to stay with his friend, biophysicist Magnus Lane and discovers that he has become addicted to a new drug that can transport him back to the 14th century. Curious, Dick also tries the potion and begins to experience the same longing for the past. As events spiral out of control, Dick must choose between family and self, the past and the present.

When I was a teenager, Daphne du Mauier was my favorite author! I think the first one of her books that I read was "Frenchman's Creek" and I loved it. Now that I am reminded of her and her awesome books, I think I will re-read a few of them. I am not sure, but I think I even see a few I have not read before. Of course, I might have just have forgotten their names. It has been a long time :)
