Hypothyroidism underdiagnosis and how to avoid it

Do suffer from constant fatigue, tiredness, constipation, cold hands or feet, poor memory and concentration? Do you have dry skin, brittle hair and have difficulty losing weight even when you try hard? These are some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism or under active thyroid. Other symptoms include depression, feelings of unworthiness, and mood swings. These symptoms can be cause by an under-active thyroid.

Now if you go to the doctor to test you thyroid functioning and the test came back normal. And the doctor told you that you just need to lose weight or see a counsel, even though you still have the above symptoms and feel that there is something wrong with you physically, don't despair or think that you're going crazy. Most doctors test for Thyroid using what is called TSH test or thyroid stimulating hormone test and the normal range for this test is wide, so even if you have thyroid problems, the test might show that you are in the normal range. That's why you should ask your doctor to run a full thyroid panel tests which include free T3, free T4, and sometimes the reverse T3 and also let them check for minerals.

All these tests should be done together since they fluctuate throughout the day. The results of these tests can give more accurate information in conjunction rather than just the TSH test.
There is also a temperature test that can be done at home and can also indicate an under-active thyroid problem. The temperature test can be done at home and it test for body temperature. If body temperature is 97.5 F or less, then that indicate an under-active thyroid problem. The test is done by putting the thermometer under your arm. It can be a digital or normal thermometer. The thermometer should be placed under your arm for 10 minutes first thing in the morning when you wake up. So don't move or get out of bed and have the thermometer next to you from the day before. This test should be done for seven days and if the average is 97.5 or less then this indicate a hypothyroid problem.

Often misdiagnosed

Hypothyroid is ofter under-diagnosed, because of the wide range of the TSH test that most doctors rely on. So people can live a poor quality of life for years before their doctor can find the problem. Sometimes people can be put on anti-depressants instead of being treated for the underlying problem since depression is a symptom of hypothyroidism. So if you suffer from those symptoms and want to find out for sure if you thyroid is functioning well, then the above test are a better indicator than the commonly used TSH test, which can be inaccurate.
