A Dark Knight DVD Disappointment? We Want Heath!

Before I launch into the Dark Knight DVD debate, I want to let you know that I've already entered to win the $70 Collector's Edition blue-ray version that comes with a collectible batpod. DarkDVD.com is doing a giveaway. I saw the video promotion of it at revver's Dark Knight DVD. Why not, you know. It's easy to enter.

Now, to the controversy...
I read recently that the bonus features on the dvd are missing any interviews with Heath Ledger, where he would supposedly talk about his rendition of the joker character and so forth. They said it was understandable that they would omit any such footage from the dvd. What!?

As if that would be offensive somehow because he died? Give me a freakin' break! The guy delivers the best performance of any of the actors in the movie, makes the film the success it is, may even be responsible for winning academy awards--both the film's and his own as best actor, then because he tragically dies toward the end of it's production someone thinks it might be insensitive to let us see him on the dvd? What retardation is that? Based on that reasoning, they better not nominate him or award him during the academy awards.

Don't you think it would be the best honor we can give him to see everything he had to say about his involvement in the movie? That's ridiculous to me to think of it as being inappropriate. The only thing I can think of, being the conspiracy-wary guy I am, is that perhaps Mr. Ledger had nothing good to say about the film or about the character he was portraying so well to all of the world. The rumor I heard was that his family said he was depressed while filming the movie, allegedly due to the warped mind he was having to live in. And if that was true, then perhaps any interviews he did showed to much of that. That would be a reason they would not want to show him. There have been weirder things you know.

So what do you think?

Anyway, the dark knight dvd comes available tomorrow. So, which version will you buy?
That collector's version is, of course, the premiere edition for the "oh so serious" Dark Knight fan. But truthfully, very few of us, no matter how much we liked the movie, will end up spending that much for the high-end version.
There's the single disk version in either standard or widescreen format. There's the blue-ray version. And then there's the two-disc non-blue-ray version. Of course, if you have a blue-ray player, then you'll buy the blue-ray disc.

Whose side are you on?

Should Heath Ledger interviews have been kept off the Dark Knight dvd?

Yes, because he died it wouldn't be appropriate.

Are you crazy? That's even more reason to let us see him.

Nick says:

Absolutely, Warner Bros used him in all the promotional stuff during the theatrical release so why stop now

says:

No way, any actor would want to be on the DVD to increase sales and fame. Ledger would be no exception.

Poll: Who Should Play the Next Joker?

It has been bandied about that Johnny Depp should be in the next Batman movie. I agree, he would do great. The question is...

First of all, I'm not a fan of "Batman Begins"- I thought it was a bit silly (ninjas?) and the Batman suit was clunky. However, the buzz on "Dark Knight" was so positive that I was prepared to be blown away...didn't happen.

Dark Knight has excellent acting and production values. Heath Ledger's performance is extraordinary and he deserved his posthumous Oscar. However, the story is just...ok. It's frankly a bit pretentious (tries to be MEANINGFUL and symbolic of the times), and it falls flat. The dialogue is also silly at times, especially Gordon's closing lines as he sums up why Batman is "heroically" sacraficing his reputation so that the dream of Harvey Dent's perfection lives on. Give me a break.

Superman (1978) and SpiderMan 2(2004) are still the best superhero movies of all time. This is just good, not great.

Oh yeah, the Batman suit is much better this time. But Bale's batman voice is still terrible.

I feel strongly about the dark knight movie because of it's impact on the collective attitude toward the terrorist mind.
