"Dark Lover" is the first in JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood vampire romance novel series.

Ms. Ward's brings us a new take on vampires. In her world they are a separate species instead of being "Undead". They have a different physiology from humans as well as a distinct culture of their own. Though they do have some things in common with vampires of legend, like drinking blood, the blood they must have to survive is blood from a vampire of the opposite sex not a humans.

Don't worry, for fans of the undead there are plenty of them around. The ancient enemy the vampires of this world battle are Undead brought into being specifically to hunt down and exterminate the vampire race. These undead monsters are known as Lessers. The "Lessers" are headed buy the Omega who is evil incarnate.

Something you'll note right away...

The main characters in JR Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood literally drip testosterone. The way they act when they come together, coupled with their names, made me laugh at first. But as you move forward in the book it only serves to reinforce the fact that these vampires truly are another species with different biological needs as well as a unique culture to support them. Though the way they try to out "macho" one another in conversations never stops being amusing to me.

Dark and action packed with a gripping back story that ties all the books together. "Dark Lover" book kept me turning pages. I actually stayed up late to finish it then started book two even though it was a work night.

Fans of vampire horror may be disappointed because even though this book deals with some very dark topics, it isn't gory. But if you love a good story where good battles evil with plenty of action or are a lover of sex filled vampire romance novels you'll rejoice at having found a new vampire romance series to sink your teeth into.

As for the sex in "Dark Lover"...
There's a LOT of it and it's yummy!

This book is both sexy and erotic. No doubt is left as to what's going on between the sheets (or elsewhere) yet it manages not to be OVERLY graphic.

A nice feature is the "Glossary of Terms and Proper Nouns" in the front of the book. This makes it easy to get up to speed on the world or to look up a term if needed. But the skill of writing makes this unnecessary as the words are used in context so the reader can usually understand their meaning easily.

As far as vampire or paranormal romance novels go JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood novel "Dark Lover" is action packed, erotic and fun. A Keeper!
