Getting Into Dark Horse Comics

Dark Horse Comics is an independant publisher of many popular comic book series, including but not limited to Star Wars, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, AVP, The Mask, 300, Aliens, Sin City, Hellboy, Aeon Flux, Planet of the Apes and Conan the Barbarian.

About Dark Horse

Originally incepted as a series of comic book stores in the mid 1980s by founder Mike Richardson, the company was established in 1986 in hopes of rejuvenating the comic book market, which was dwindling from an extreme lack of adaptability. In the short-run, the company experienced incredible success with well over 20 awards within its first two years, and the signing on of several heavy hitters in the industry, including but not limited to Frank Miller and Mike Mignola.

Typically associated with indie comics, Dark Horse offers a fresh new perspective on comics and graphic novels, and is set apart from the two giants: Marvel Comics and DC Comics. It has the profound capacity to stay alive in this very well-dominated market, as the third largest publisher of licensed comics.

Original Dark Horse titles include famous series such as 300, Hellboy, The Mask, and Sin City. Additionally, Dark Horse took on many popular licensed titles, that include Aeon Flux, Aliens, AVP, Conan the Barbarian, Godzilla, King Kong, Planet of the Apes, Predator, Star Wars, Tarzan, Xena, and many others.

The company's branch: "Dark Horse Entertainment," has achieved success with film adaptations of its comic book series, such as The Mask and Hellboy.

Hellboy, Vol. 3: The Chained Coffin and Others

Mike Mignola's story notes accompany the long out-of-print stories, giving insight into their creation and inspiration. Some consider Mignola's short stories better than the full-length novels, and this collection makes a strong argument for that, especially with Mignola's masterpiece, "The Corpse."

The second collection of short stories by award-winning cartoonist Mike Mignola includes the 1999 hit series Box Full of Evil; "The Right Hand of Doom," which concisely and thoroughly examines Hellboy's history; and "Pancakes," Mignola's most hilarious and surprising story to date; and others - many presented here in color for the first time.
