Sequel to Batman Begins
Batman (Christian Bale) teams with Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) to continue dismantling Gotham City's criminal organizations in this sequel to Batman Begins. But a psychotic new villain known as the Joker (Heath Ledger, in a Golden Globe-nominated role) threatens to undo all their good work. This movie is in danger of becoming the greatest story about good versus evil EVER to be told on film!! In other words its flawless and even though I think it will be knocked of the number 1 spot on IMDB when the hype dies down, it will drop to no less than 3rd .
What separates this film from others that have been made in the last decade, or better yet 25 to 30 years, is that it has power to grip you and engage you in a way that only The Godfather and Empire Strikes Back could do. Nothing has come close, until NOW. The crime saga factor is as strong as any I have seen, the constant double crosses and deaths of major characters keeps you locked as to what will happen next. The car bombs, the bank robbery's, the corruption, the drama, the dialogue, but mainly the power of the characters give it the realism of Mario Puzzo's classic tale! The sheer evil, represented mainly by the Joker, is so dark and disturbing that you DON'T think you are watching a Batman film. Heath Ledger is that good that any actor such as DeNiro, Pacino, Nickleson and Hopkins would be proud. Frankly your jaw will be on the floor every time you see him on screen.
However this is not what really makes this film tick. Harvey Dent, Gothoms newly elected D.A and ally to Batman and Jim Gordon, is the only character that is pure and honest. He does everything by the book and manages to get the same results as Batman who breaks the law trying to restore order! This brings me to the Empire Strikes back factor. When certain events happen to Harvey he becomes a very twisted and dark character who seeks revenge, especially with those who he thought he could trust. I cant say to much about what Harvey endures but it is so reminiscent of that of Luke Skywalker or even Darth Vader that you feel for him so much. The Joker acts as the Emperor in turning this man to the dark side with his retched taunting and twisted logic! All I can say is that you need to watch this film a few times to really get this story, but trust me its worth it.
Overall I give this film 10 out of 10 because it has all the qualities that is seriously lacking in film today. Its a story with heart and meaning just like the two classics I have mentioned and Christopher Nolan is quite simply the greatest film maker alive today. Spielberg and Co should be ashamed!!
