What is Dark Magick and The Dark Arts?

What's So Dark About The Dark Arts?

The terms "Dark Magick" and "The Dark Arts" both describe a category of occultism that involves interaction with the hidden, rejected and denied aspects of nature. Nature refers not only to the stuff going on around you but includes human nature as well. The Dark Arts practitioner especially needs to understand and accept the dark aspects of their own nature. Another important point I need to make clear up front about Dark Magick is that, while often stigmatized by mainstream spiritual paths, it is a set of techniques that are useful to anyone interested in embracing their entire self holistically. The Dark Arts are best employed by those who also work with the "Light" sides of nature. Light vs. Dark, in this context, is a false dichotomy. I hope to dispell some common misconceptions about the Dark Arts.

Why Choose the Dark Side?

I personally feel that "Dark Side"/"Light Side" is a false dichotomy. Dark Magick doesn't necessarily involve malevolent goals. This popular misconception comes mainly from our fiction. The protagonist in most fiction is an abnormally pure person and their antagonist is typically an abnormally evil character. It is true that some people get involved with the hidden, rejected and twisted forces of nature because their goals demand that they seek out less benevolent forces. This is certainly not the only motivation for delving into the shadows. The truth is that you don't have to choose Dark or Light alone. The Taoist Yin/Yang symbol is a useful way to express this concept.

There are many Dark Magicians who are first and foremost knowledge seekers, motivated to transcend all false dichotomies and move beyond good and evil. These "Dark Magicians" are simply those who have the courage and drive to explore their own shadow. Once inside the shadow, the demonic and bestial "entities" found there can be recruited into the magician's service. Ideally they can be healed and fully integrated into the practitioner's consciousness. The results being that the entity's life force, experience and skills eventually become directly available to the magician with no more resistance. The healed and integrated shadow entity can now continue to grow healthy in the light of consciousness, retaining it's quintessential nature and now participating in a greater united consciousness. This process is similar to some forms of psychotherapy. In shamanic practice, this is often referred to as "soul retrieval."

Which Arts Are Dark?

Traditional "Dark Arts" include the practice of demonic evocation, the breaking of taboos, necromancy, sexual rites, treasure hunting, berserker combat, shapeshifting, gaining and employing animal familiars, dealings with savage gods, the use of plant intoxicants/entheogens and the casting of curses, etc...

A Dark Magickian may practice any combination of these traditional arts as well as some more modern ones. Hypnosis, Chaos Magick, Neo-Druidism and work with extra-terrestrial (and otherwise alien) intelligences are some of the relatively recent developments which all include their own explorations of the dark and disturbing side of things.

Even such things as traditional and modern creative arts (painting, poetry, music, ceremony, film making, dance, etc...) can, and often do involve the deep and sincere explorations of the broken and refused. The resulting experience is communicated and/or recorded through their preferred modality. Those artists who dare to draw up leviathan with a hook and express that can certainly be considered as practitioners of the Dark Arts.

Magical Battle!

Let us know if you study the Dark Arts. What is your motivation?

Do you study the Dark Arts? and Why?

Loading

Hell yeah, and I'll tell you why!

nephthys says:

I study anything that sounds interesting, and it's cool!

Babu-Banik says:

Dark magic and black magic is nothing but ways to fool and cheat people. I trust in almighty and believe if you trust in god then no one can harm you. Not even the self proclaimed black magic practiser.

DarrylGarrick says:

I am a practitioner of 'Baneful Magick', I have thrown Hexes at my enemies and they do work -- This however doesn't make me a bad person (actually I'm probably one of the nicest people you could ever meet).

SukoMiabals says:

Satanism encourages one to advance in every aspect of life.....to become skilled in self improvement.

RevBlackrose says:

Hi Jeremy. Our paths cross again. Yeah, I practice with both hands. I work with both the Light and the Dark. I believe the true "Black Magician" masters both.

Ludy says:

Because the world is filled with humans... I hope they all gone...

Roseblood says:

Sure, I have cursed once or twice. I am a "child of chaos" I work with whatever feels the best at the moment. Be it black, red, blue(my favourite) or white.

No way! This is why...

angelsigh says:

nope....been there done that...no more

mihgasper says:

I see no use of it. I think you have to believe in some sort of higher power for this and I don't...

Cinnamonbite says:

Nah, it's cute, but I'm an atheist. I'm just looking at alternative religions as a hoot, not seriously.

BelindaBlevins says:

No, but I am extremely interested in it.

bonecone says:

I just have a different interpretation of what the dark arts are. Exploring the denied aspects of ones self is simply bringing those parts of yourself into the light, where they can be transmuted. To me the dark arts would be the use of spiritual knowledge to harm, manipulate, deceive, exploit and just to do generally negative things to other people.

spirituality says:

I stay on the light side - which doesn't mean ignoring the dark sides in myself, but involves cleaning that out. Dark magic will always be going upstream, because long term karma is against it.

andrasnm says:

no, I stay on the right-hand side....

The practice of the dark arts sounds to me like a middle path philosophy where the individual simply accepts and embraces all aspects of the self. Sounds cool. I wonder, does the Dark Arts also accept and embrace those aspects of personality that desire to commit heinous crimes against others?

The balance is most importent not dark or light, black or white.
The balance must be preserved, regardless of the sacrifices.
Humans are here to preserve the balance, but we forgot how.

Why does one study any form of science and art? To study the Dark Arts is to study the nature of one's self and also to explore the paths of magick that uses the crude emotions, dark emotions, and anger into something useful and productive. Emotions are our driving force and to be ignorant of the human's capacity of power in the occult is to be ignorant of life. Explore all paths and learn that there is no good or evil, there is only power, knowledge, and wisdom.
Names are names, and humans must categorize everything as good or bad. In reality, there is no such thing as the "dark" or "light" path. It is all magick. It is all occult. It is all natural.
Believe what you wish, but humans are always performing "light" and "dark" as it is all in perspective. Truth, beauty, and many other variables in life are judged in the eyes in the beholder. They are not fact or truth. These are all opinions backed up by years of ignorance (and ignorance blatantly means lack of knowledge or understanding).
Therefore do not condemn the dark arts, but embrace it and study it. If you do not agree because it is "evil" then take the lessons learned and make them into your daily agenda to better your life.

This is merely my opinion and I do not care to know how other's feel about it. I purely wrote this to give another thought on the subject. I hope you enjoyed it.
    Good day,
