The Name Darla is English in Origin and Means: "Dear, Loved One"
My name has always stood out. It's not Darlene, it's not Carla, but I always have and always will be called both. Darla was a moderately popular name in the 1950's but it seems to have been around for at least 20-30 years at that time.
Darla of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame was interesting to me, since she was supposed to be living in the 1400's or 1500's (I can't recall, please Buffy fans help me out here!) Darla was the first character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer to slay a vampire, and that's pretty darn cool.
Before vampire killing and the later on vampire Darla played by Julie Benz, the only Darla people seemed to think of when they heard my name was Darla Hood, Alfalfa's girlfriend on The Little Rascals. "Are you Alfalfa's girlfriend?!? Hee hee hee!" Oh yeah, really funny - I'm all bent over in co-laughter here.
The next media Darla-ing was Darla (Darler in Aussie parlance), the bratty frenzied girl who yelled "wake up, fishie!!!" in the Disney movie, Finding Nemo. I sway between love and hate for that character. But I'm happy that there's finally more Darlas to take away the syrupy sweet image of the Little Rascals girl, although deep in my heart I love her.
