You asked for it...

You got it!

It's high time to update and improve the lensmaster dashboard.

For 3 reasons:

1. If you've got 100 or 200 or 400 lenses (and so many of you do!) the existing dash is pretty darn unwieldy.

2. Even if you only have 5 or 10 lenses, there are still a lot of opportunities to make your dashboard smarter, friendlier, and easier to get around.

3. The lensmaster dashboard is one of Squidoo's most visited non-lens pages.

So here's what we're going to do.

First, I want to round up a wishlist of things you guys would like to see on your dashboard. What would help you keep an eye on lenses that are working, triage lenses that need love, and generally manage your lens universe? Post your wishes below. Make a reasoned case for each. We can't implement all of your requests, and some might not fit into the grand scheme of things, but you know we're listening!

Next, I'll synthesize all the feedback and post our big picture strategy, to let you know what direction we're taking this and why. Here it is!

Third, I'll post some comps for you guys to review and play with and offer any feedback on. (If I'm lucky I might be able to let some of you into our testing sandbox, so you can really dig in and play with a working prototype).

Last, we'll launch the new dashboard and, as always, gather up playtesting feedback after you've had a few days to see it all in action.

Good?

Good.

Let's go.

Heads up, Firefox SquidooDE users!

If you've installed Magicality's lensmaster-created Dashboard Extension, heads up!

As I told him well in advance of this launch, our improvements to the dashboard will bust his DE firefox extension for anyone who has it installed on Squidoo. :(

So if you have it installed, please uninstall it so that your dash doesn't go ape.

The good news is that I'm sure there will be lots of new ideas for another lensmaster-run dashboard extension, and that Magicality (and anyone else) is always invited to make new ones! Just be forewarned that sometimes, unofficial extensions get broken when we release new stuff.

But first, a little background and strategy for you

First, some interesting stats:

* The lensmaster dashboard receives 4.3% of page views on the entire site.
* It's the most viewed page by lensmasters.
* At the moment the Dashboard is just an index of lenses, an A-to-Z, a laundry list.
* There is enormous potential here to help lensmasters make more, better, more easily watchable and editable lenses. And, more importantly, to get out of your way and give you more controls.

So, imagine you're a lensmaster returning to Squidoo. (Hey, look, you are). You're probably coming back to see how your lenses are doing (are they getting traffic? comments? do people like them? have I made a sale?). Or you're ready to make a new one.

We know who you are. We know what kinds of lenses you've made. We know how they're performing.

Introducing the Daily Digest page.

The dashboard isn't just a content management system, it's not just an index of lenses. It's also the front page of your personal Squidoo newspaper. It's a place for you to see headlines, movers&shakers, info about YOUR lenses.

It's also a place to check in on your lenses and watch what's happening with them--which are working? which need TLC? which are in trouble? which are really popular right now? What do you need to take action on. That's what the dashboard needs to tell you. That's what the new Daily Digest page does.

There will be five versions of this Daily Digest Dashboard page, depending on the number of lenses the lensmaster has. There's a version for lensmasters with 1 lens only, a version for 2 lenses only, a version for 3-9 lenses, a version for 10+ lenses, and a version for Giant Squids. The 10+ version give you a lot of new tools for managing your roster of lenses. Even if you have 400 lenses, you should find this new dashboard easy to navigate and organize.

Introducing the Lens Labels.

For starters, we wanted to make it easy for you to sort your lenses by a bunch of different criteria. Top earners. Big traffic. Needs to be updated. Lots of comments in Guestbooks. WIP or locked lenses. And so on.

So we created a Pick Your view section, where you can look at a dashboard of just the lenses you want to see.

But it gets better. Way better.

You know how you can stick mail in folders, and how Gmail has a way to organize messages by label or tag? Now your dashboard has a way to add custom, personal labels to your lenses.

For example, do you have a lot of lenses about dog breeding, and then a bunch of others about movies? Make a label for each topic, assign the relevant lenses to it, so you can easily organize lenses by whatever category you want. What about a To-Do list label? Maybe you want to flag a bunch of lenses that you keep meaning to work on, or add that cool new Duel module to, or email out to friends. Make a To-Do label, assign lenses you want to work on, and go. The opportunities are pretty much endless. Finally, you can manage hundreds of custom, personalized micro-dashboards all at once.

And, because it's always fun to see your whole list of lenses at once and sort within there, we've kept the All Lenses list front and center for you.

Coming Soon: The Comm Center

We know, you get a lot of email from your lenses. Lots of Squidcasts. Lots of comments. And you send out even more. Wouldn't it be great to have a communications center on Squidoo, a place where you can see all your comments, duel comments, messages, updates, Squidcasts, etc all at once? Where you can decide to get a digest update of all your messages daily, weekly, or as they occur? Yeah. We thought so. Stay tuned, that's up next.

Remember:

The whole idea of a dashboard is that it can show you, at a glance, what's happening in your world. What do you need to know, right now, to take action?

Sneak Preview!

Here's a preview of some static pages from our staging server. Please note that these are just big images and as such will take a while to load in your browser. The live site will be nice and zippy.

1. Here's a look at the Daily Digest page for someone with lots of lenses.

Notes to correspond to the pink numbers...
1. This is the new Lens Labels section. Looks are deceiving...this simple little section packs a serious punch. You can see that I've created my own lists to organize lenses in -- a weekly to do list, a MonkeyBrain list, a My Restaurant Lenses list, etc.
2. Everyone with 3 or more lenses will get this Lens Lists section of filters we've automatically set up for you: Big Earners, Big Traffic, Most Commented, etc. When you click on each you'll see a description of what the lists mean, and which lenses fall under them.
3. Every time you come to your dash, we'll show you, at random, one of your lowest LensRank lenses here. Just so you know what you might want to work on!

2. This is what your Lens Lists look like. For example, this is a list I set up to organize for my HeyMonkeyBrain lenses.

3. This is the screen you get when you want to Apply lenses to a particular label. So if you want to set up a My Tattoo Lenses list, just create a label, then pick it from the dropdown here and check off the lenses you want to add to it. Voila!

What you wished for

Removing a feature could also be a feature!

Thanks to everyone who submitted ideas for dashboard features. We couldn't do all of them, but we've done a lot!

Universal default settings, so I can make changes to ALL my lenses at once

Example: I want to be able to edit my bio and pic on all my lenses. Or I want to turn the TOC and Discover Tool on or off for all my lenses. Stuff like that.23 points

I'd love to be able to group my lenses

Either by topic, category, or key words22 points

I'd really like to look at the dashboard and see if one of my links is messed up

So I know at a glance which lenses need my attention first.22 points

I want to be able to run my own "to-do" list right on my Dashboard

So I can store notes for particular lenses. And so I can make a list of which lenses to work on next.20 points

I think Giant Squids should get their own special dashboard.

17 points

Number the lenses (like SquidUtils)

So that I can see at a glance how many lenses I have.17 points

I'd really like to sort my lenses

It would be very useful to be able to sort lens by lens title, rank, visits, $$ and edited. For fast ways of finding a lens and finding which need more work, etc16 points

Group Admin

When approving new lenses for groups I would like check boxes to approve or deny multiple lenses at once.14 points

Video Removed for YouTube Module Notification

Sometimes, I go to my lenses and realized that a video has been removed, yet is still linked to on my lens. I'd love to have a notification telling me that the video is no longer available.14 points

Tag management

Basic tag management tools would be wonderful: ability to edit tags from the dashboard, see primary tags, compare tag profiles of different lenses, compare tag profiles of lenses in the same category, add one tag to multiple lenses, add multiple tags to multiple lenses, sort by common tags, find 'orphaned' tags, etc.13 points

Group Stats & Management

Add the groups to the dashboard the same way the lenses are, with performance, stats, members; edit, etc.13 points

Sort by SquidBrand

Some sort of color coding or tiny icon would be useful to help identify Squidoo, SquidWho, Squidvids, etc. Then make it sortable like rank, name, earnings, etc.12 points

"Lensrolled By..." Tool

Who's lensrolled my lenses? It might be useful to know.12 points

Introduce me to other lensmasters writing on my topic

Use your Related Lenses formula to suggest Related Lensmasters that I might like to meet and know on Squidoo. If I make a lens about tattoos, it would be cool to see other lensmasters with lots of lenses on that topic.11 points

I want a list of Requested Lenses, lenses other people wish I would build

10 points

How about a mega-toolbox? There are so many neat lensmaster tools that go unnoticed...

9 points

Un-truncate the titles

I have several lenses that have the same beginning, with a different ending, but with truncated titles, I can't tell them apart without going into the lens itself.9 points

Indicate number of fans on the dashboard or under stats

Please put the count of number of my fans, that used to run on the previous version of the Maxed view mode, somewhere on my dashboard. This was interesting info for the lensmaster, but agree that it should not necessarily be public.9 points

Ebay Sales

I don't see any ebay royalties...9 points

Ability to export stats to CSV file

This would give the lensmaster the ability to track lens stats over the long term easily using almost any spreadsheet program.8 points

A regular search box like the one on this page . .

. . so I can search for other people's lenses from my dashboard.7 points

More Comprehensible Royalties Tab

Sometimes a number seems to stick around there for months-- when will it go to the hopper? Also, if it's not Amazon sales, hard to tell what it is.7 points

A Quick Filter

I'd like to have a box at the top of the dashboard where I can enter a short string, e.g. "xbox", and it will filter the list to only show lenses that contain that string. Matches should be done on name and title.6 points

Ability to categorise lenses on the dashboard

Is it possible (within the dashboard only) to create categories of our own for our lenses that we can then sort lenses according to categories (not visible to anyone else). (Eg, "Halloween"; "Needs work"; "Series on polka dot history", etc)6 points

Steal the best bits from 3rd party addons

...such as the Dashboard Extension and the Advanced Dashboard, so that everyone can benefit from them.5 points

featured Lens Module!

I would Love to be able to set up my featured Lenses modules in advance and save them and then add them to my lenses as I want. Would save heaps of time.4 points

I'd really like to see better icons, so I know when my lens is WIP

3 points

A Search Box

So I can type in a keyword from the title of my lens, and jump right to that lens, instead of scrolling back and forth looking for it in my long list of lenses.2 points

An Easier Way to Identify Sales & Earnings

Maybe a link - or somewhere on the dashboard where this can be easily seen and understood.2 points

Check Traffic Stats Algorithm

Squidaholic and the traffic stats tab don't always agree, and people using Statcounter also report discrepancies.2 points

Improve Organization of Groups Tab/Page

Be able to show/hide all groups in a category. List by lens titles, as in main dashboard, with hover? or pulldown menu of what groups each lens belongs to.2 points

New Page Co-brands in One Spot

ability to make a new page showing each of the co-brands in one place, so we can choose2 points

Could we have a different homepage for lensmasters?

When I log in as a lensmaster I am dropped straight onto my dashboard. But I only have 3 lenses and that's not very educational for me. I'd rather see a bunch of other great lenses to learn from or some ideas for lenses or other advice.0 points

Lens Transfer Info Available & Readable

On long title pages, all the necessary information is buried. Need to upgrade lens/group transfer procedures and make them more accessible.0 points

What you WON'T see on the new dashboard

at least, not yet

I know a lot of you want a way to edit a bunch of lenses at once, or make global changes to your lens bios or tags and such. That was the #2 most wished for thing on your list above (at least for a while). There's a LOT of technical work that needs to go into that, and a few ways that people could really abuse it (not YOU, of course) so we haven't developed this yet. Not saying we couldn't or won't -- I just wanted to acknowledge that you asked for it, and explain why it's not in this release.

Some good news for people who don't like change

Unlike the lens redesign process, the lensmaster dashboard is not something we need to keep tweaking and testing and evolving over time.

We haven't made any major updates to the dashboard in 2 years, and it's high time! So we're going to do it in one big overhaul, and give you plenty of heads-up time so that you're not too disoriented by the new dash.

From there we'll make little improvements based on your feedback and every now and then as new features arise, but it won't be an ongoing, volatile process. So breathe a sigh of relief, pour yourself a cup of coffee, work on some lenses and keep an eye out for Dashboard announcements in the SquidU forums.

Questions on the new dash?

Our Giant Squid Organizers, and 7 speedy Giants (first come, first got) are playtesting the new dashboard for us. Here are some of the Qs they've had, and some answers (coming soon).

OK, I admit I freaked out a little at first! I thought, "oh no, CHANGES!" But, after spending only about 2 minutes of poking around, I was hooked! I love the way we can assign labels and organize our lenses any we want, and I LOVE being able to see my eBay royalties! Thanks, Squidoo, for all your hard work and taking care of us little squidees! :-) {hugs & goopy kisses!}

It needs the slimmed down and colorful presentation of the DE worked into it, the disappearing action feature, plus the averages for lensrank, money, etc. It's a new look but back to the old "hands tied" functions. And the Daily Dashboard plays to the lowest lensmaster intellectual denominator. I hope the dashboard for Giants is an improvement...

I just tried it out for the first time, and I love it. I can still access the old look of the dash if I want it, but the new version slaps me in the face (with love) about which lenses need to be updated or freshened. It's a big help. I would write more, but I have lenses to freshen up. LOL

P.S. THANKS!

Thanks to Loyalis's wishlist page, and Magicality's Firefox Extension, we've already looked at a bunch of your dashboard requests and are working many of them in.

Thanks guys. You two are rockstars.
