Data Recovery news and information
As a long serving technical specialist in data recovery, data migration and computer forensics I believe it is important to be open and honest with information to enable people to make educated judgments about whether they require professional services, if they are just going to be wasting money, and to know if they are being taken for a ride.

What to look for from a data recovery company
Search for data recovery and you will find loads of companies offering to recover your data from RAID, hard disk drive, backup tape. Most will have a record of success that is unsurpassed by all of the others, so how can you make an informed about which service to use? Who are the competent professionals? Who just got that high Google ranking by mentioning "data recovery" several hundred times on each page and employing a link farm?
1. Recommendation
As with any service, if someone whom you know and trust has had a good experience with a data recovery company then they is a good sign. Be cautious though, just because a data recovery company recovered your Aunt Agatha's holiday photo's from her XD card does not necessarily mean that they have the technical skill to deal with your 12 disk Windows RAID.
2. Do you just get the sales pitch?
When you make contact with the data recovery company what is the response? Are you able to communicate directly with technical staff? Or, do you feel as if you are at the mercy of someone who would not know a hard disk from a hamburger? My advice is that if you don't get do discuss your problem (by phone or email) with someone who leaves you with the impression that they understand the problem, and how to work around it, then it is time to walk away.
3. Do you feel that your questions have been answered?
If you came away feeling as if your questions had been sidestepped, and stock answers had been provided, then move on. There are many other companies offering data recovery services.
So if you have been able to communicate with someone who understands the problem with your disk, tape, RAID or whatever, and has left you feeling that you have been given frank and open responses to your questions, this is a good start. Not a guarantee, but possibly as good as you will get.
Whilst you are at it, it could be worth reading up on some data recovery related subjects. Here are a load of articles on data recovery that I have to confess to, there are plenty more by other authors, but hopefully these are a good start.
I do run a company that sells data recovery, data migration and computer forensic services so am not entirely neutral, but will always try to help and give impartial advice, so feel free to drop me a line via the form on my data recovery company web site.
