Here's the basics on how to tell if a work at home job is a scam.

On basic principle, never, ever pay to apply for a job, find out more information about a job, or pay money to become hired for a job.

Some jobs might require special software, special equipment, special items that you need. These might be an exception. An ebook manual is not something that costs money to distribute, so why pay for it?

You might also pay for a background check, but ask if the background check can be done via a third party that you pay for. Some people collect background check money and never perform the background check.

There are a million ways to get scammed. How do you avoid all the scams? I do it by tracking down legitimate jobs. It is easier than you think. Remember the number one rule, never pay for a job! Once you stick to that, you'll be on your way.

Here's the deal, there are many companies out there wanting someone else to do their work for them. It takes some talent and skill to find a job. You either can do it or you can't.

You need to be able to type correctly, have a resume, type and chat to a company in an eloquent manner, and all other sorts of skills.

Now I want to talk about what types of jobs you can find.

Copy And Paste - Probably the lowest paying job, don't expect to earn much more than minimum wage. You'll get paid per hour or per task, mostly per task. Simple copy and paste into a spreadsheet, posting links online, etc. You'll find these jobs at freelance sites like guru.com and getafreelancer.com.

Surveys - Not a job, and certainly isn't always stable, but if you are just looking for some extra bucks, there are site where you can find legit companies wanting to pay you for your opinion.

Transcription - For fast typists with good ears, a transcription job is listening to people talk, and typing down what is being said. Great pay rate when you get started, and a few companies hire without experience.

Writing - Join Squidoo, or sign up for other websites and get paid to write articles. This is probably the quickest and easiest job to get started, especially with so many resources available online. One catch: Grammar, spelling and understanding of your language (any language will do!) is very important.

Phone Surveys/Data Collection - Many companies need someone to call specific people and ask questions, get information, etc. Unlike selling or customer service calls, you're only asking a few simple questions. These jobs can also pay very well, averaging $10 an hour or more.
