My Favorite Date Night Dinner

Date Night

The other day, my husband and I were grocery shopping. We were headed to the car when we passed an older couple getting ready to leave. Dad was in back, with the trunk open, putting things away. Mom was already in the passenger seat, seat belt strapped on. She was saying something we couldn't quite hear to the old man. The man mumbled under his breath, "Ah, shut up!"

I never wanted my marriage to go sour like that. So, I decided to make it a point to always have a romantic dinner every week. I cook the meal at home. I usually try to make something new and special every time. After awhile, we settled on our favorite dinner. This one comes up quite often at our house. Bon appetit!

Elements Of a Romantic Dinner

My own list of what I want to do and have.
  • Candles (Candles do take a hiatus during the summer months.)
  • Wine. Always start a romantic dinner with a glass of wine.
  • Cloth napkins. No paper napkins or paper towels for dinner.
  • A special meal like steak or seafood
  • Mood music. I love jazz.
  • Everything made from scratch. No rotisserie chicken tonight!

The Appetizer

I don't always make an appetizer. If dinner is going to take awhile, then I might to build up the anticipation. Something simple is my plan. I might do something like shrimp cocktail or a small spread of artisan cheeses. My main focus, of course, is on the meal.

The point of the appetizer is to whet your appetite. Build up the anticipation for a lovely dinner. If you want to split the work, have your spouse take charge of preparing the appetizer.

The Entre'

My favorite date night entre' is without a doubt, filet mignon. I prepare my filet by searing it for about 1 to 2 minutes on each side. Then, I'll reduce the heat. I'll add a couple pats of butter, a crushed garlic clove. A sprig of rosemary or thyme is good too. This method follows this recipe from Epicurious:

Beef Medallions With Cognac Sauce

For the sauce, I go to another Epicurious recipe. I'll give you a heads up: the recipe take awhile, over an hour. It's mostly reduction time, so you're not at the stove. Since my husband likes baked potatoes, this works out well to do both.

Great Movies To Cuddle Up With

The Netflix module has been phased out. You should edit your lens and try adding an Amazon module instead!

Why Bother?

  • You both deserve a good meal.
  • You'll save money rather than going out.
  • You'll make something you can't get anywhere else.
  • Cooking is more fun when romance is the motivation.
  • You get a chance to be creative in the kitchen.
  • It's just about what you like and what your spouse likes.
  • Isn't your spouse worth it?

OMG, I'd be here a long time if I started to elaborate my ideas for a romantic evening -- part of the importance of this is buy-in from one's mate! A little romance can surely take us a long ways!

Remember

It's all about sharing the love.
