A game night is the answer for us.

Since we got married (to each other), had kids, struggled financially, and been very, very busy, we decided to make a real effort to continue dating each other. But the challenge is trying to come up with something fun to do that meets our family's needs.

With a date night at home, we save money. We don't have to find a babysitter. We don't have to worry too much about keeping it PG while they are still awake. We can enjoy a nice meal or some great sandwiches, a bottle of wine or a couple of beers. (Tip: Keep your drinks and food on a separate table like a TV tray so it is away from the game to avoid spills.)

With a little care towards good sportsmanship, playing board games together is a wonderful time to play, laugh, have fun, and be kids again. It gives us a break from the usual conversations. We have a lot of fun competing against and outsmarting one another. I love trouncing my spouse in the Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, or Settlers of Catan board games! We come up with some good date night type of rewards for the winner.

I really like the "Eurogames", like Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, or Ticket to Ride.

I only recently started playing these games and I find the rules easy but the strategizing challenging. You have to balance making a play, and planning ahead, with the luck of the draw. The game play is always different. The board is made of tiles that can be laid out in any number of combinations. The game pieces feel elegant to the touch. They are substantial and nicely textured. It is so much fun to see yourself being smart, tricky, or sometimes just plain lucky. And when your spouse compliments your maneuvers or has a "you-got-me!" moment, it can be quite a pleasure.

Give board games a try on your next date night. Make a nice dinner, put the kids to bed, enjoy some wine, and relax. You can spend some quality time together and maybe the winner can have a special reward!
