I Love Dave Ramsey: But I Have Questions, Lets Answer Them!

Ranked #12,236 in Business & Work, #284,931 overall

I LOVE DAVE RAMSEY!

I do, he helps so many people. He is kind, but tough, he has integrity and sticks to his guns. He is a good man, with lots of knowledge and knows who he is. He doesn't like big banks, he is all for personal responsibility. He has helped millions of people get out of debt! You can't beat that.

BUT....he isn't perfect and I have questions that he doesn't answer. Others have done a great job talking about the wonders of Dave Ramsey, and i have researched and listed them for you here. I recommend them all.

But this lens looks at some of the questions I have.

Three Dave Classics

These are on three of Dave's Favorites! 1. Life insurance 2. FICO scores and 3. the scumbag debt collectors

Dave Ramsey in a Contradiction

Dave Ramsey cuts cardsDave Ramsey is one of those conservatives who insist that the government can't do anything right. Nothing. Everything can be done better by capitalism and private enterprise.

I am certainly not making any argument against capitalism, although I know the government is needed for capitalism to run at its best. This isn't about capitalism, its about the contradiction that is inherent in so many 'the government can't do anything' arguments from 'the government should keep its hands off my medicare' to well, Dave Ramsey.

While insisting that that government can't do anything well, he sent his kids to state universities, the University of Tennessee being one of them. Now I think state universities are great, and I don't have a problem with the wealthy using them. But I wonder at someone who decries the incompetency of the government in one sentence and then recommends the governments' educational institutions in the next.

Dave is an honest guy. I don't think he sees the contradiction. Do you?

Is This a Contradiction?

I won't call this hypocrisy, because I don't think Dave Ramsey is that kind of guy. But I do think it is a contradiction that many conservatives fall into.

These Lensemasters Have Done Great Work On Dave Ramsey: Don't Miss Them!

Their lenses tell us about Dave, his philosophy and his program. They have done that work for me and I thank them! Do read these lenses, especially the series that details each of Dave's Baby Steps.

boutiqueships has a group of lenses that goes into each Baby Step in detail, those are a must. But they all give information.

Oh, and I say this with a smile on my face, don't forget to come back here to buy your books. Well, they all did a great job!

What Do You Know About Dave Ramsey?

Dave Says Get Your Money to a Small Local Bank

Move Your Money. Org
Dave hates big banks. He says to move your money. I emailed him this link, but he doesn't talk about it.

It is, however, a great resource. Put in your zip code and you will get a list of stable, small and local banks. Dave should love this.

Dave Ramsey Is Right

"Capitalism without morality is anarchy"
(But Dave, it also needs government)

Can Someone Explan This to Me?

Dave Ramsey hates big banks. When people call with bank problems he always takes the time to talk about how bad big banks are and how stupid the employees are. OK, I'm with that.

But when someone calls with a problem with medical insurance companies, he seems to excuse what the insurance companies do. A woman called. She had had a miscarriage and the insurance company canceled her maternity coverage. He said that they probably did that to everyone. Now, he did give good advice as to what to do, but why defend the insurance companies? Dave, they cancel anyone they think might need the coverage they have been paying for. That's what they do and that's why we need the government.

Several times, I have heard people call and say that they had huge medical bills they couldn't pay. Dave would sound angry at them asking them why they didn't have insurance. They replied that they did, but the insurance company found a way to not pay. Dave will then give good advice, but not a mention of the insurance company's duplicity or the stupidity of their employees?

I don't get it. Do you have any ideas why he does this?

Dave Ramsey Hates Big Banks, But Defends Big Insurance..Why?

I just don't get why Dave, a Christian, doesn't get upset when medical insurance companies refuse to cover their policy holders, but yet he will get mad a banks for misdeeds.

He Doesn't Know What Insurance Companies Do and Here Is Why...

7Suze7 says:

I don't know, I think its weird, especially since he seems to care about people

He Doesn't Care What Insurance Companies Do and Here Is Why......

Dave Is Almost Always True To His Word

Suse Orman has suggested that everyone stop going to restaurants for a month, with no consideration of what that would do to an entire industry, making its employees unemployed and perhaps the people who didn't go to the restaurants eventually unemployed. OK, she says she once went broke going to restaurants when she was unemployed herself. OK, I see that, maybe.

BUT one day she told Oprah that she only owns one pair of earrings and that that was all that any one should own. However, she hawks her wares on QVC, giving tacit approval to the epitome of over consumption of luxuries such as....earrings!

Dave on the other hand really sticks to his guns! He is against credit cards thus, you cannot go to his site and buy his books or courses with a credit card! You must use a debit card, which means you are basically paying cash!

So What Do You Think?

Was I Fair? Was I Too Hard on Dave? Do You Have Questions I Didn't Ask?

With his advise on Life Insurance & Investments....He is setting up alot of people to fail in the future. It makes NO sense whatsoever! Talk to someone in their mid 60's or 70's and ask them if they wish they had more permanent insurance... In a perfect world we would be able to self insure ourselves upon retirement. But who has control of the stock market. If we don't need life isurance at age 65...do we not need homeowners insurance...car insurance??? Any educated individual will tell you that this guy is a joke... If you would like to continue to take advice on your investmentsfrom a guy, who is not licensed to give professional investment advice...go ahead

I debated about publishing this, but then decided that it was important.

Of course, comparing car insurance and life insurance is a very poor example. People who have no dependents to care for after they die don't need life insurance, because that is what that is for. But they do need auto insurance to protect who ever they might hit and their own wealth.

And anyone who has honestly done the math knows that whole life is a very poor deal indeed.

One More Question

Dave is a great guy, a Christian and a truly caring person. BUT when he reads about someone disagreeing with him, he says the person hates him. He likes to think that people who give different advise hate him. He laughs when he is told that he made someone mad.

I have noticed this about conservatives in general. Many of them seem to like to think that they are making people mad? Why? Why do they like to think that they are getting people upset?

Any ideas?

  • _Joan_ Nov 2, 2010 @ 8:53 pm | delete
It's been a while since I heard Dave's show, so I haven't heard those particular comments about anger and haters. But I think that some people (and I've seen it on the extremes of both the left and the right) have their opinions so closely intertwined with their concepts of morality that they feel that anyone who disagrees with them is immoral. If an "evil" person hates you or is mad at you, that's a sign that you're doing something right. A Christian would relate it to Matthew 5:11-12: "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven:"
