Nikon Makes Cameras - Lots of Them! Since 1917...

Nikon Corporation makes some of the finest cameras available--with a selection ranging from professional single-lens reflex bodies with interchangeable lenses to starter cameras that are good for beginners or those who just want to take casual pictures.

The company was founded in 1917 as the "Nippon Kogaku Kogyo Kabushikigaisha" ("Japan Optical Industries Corporation"). Later, in 1988 the company was renamed Nikon after the name it has used for its cameras and for which the company has become famous. (The name "Nikon" originated in 1946 from a merging of NIppon Kogaku ("Japan Optical") and an imitation of the Zeiss Ikon.

Nikon is famous for its Nikkor lenses (used on the F-mount cameras, photographic enlargers, and other applications), its Nikon F-series of 135 film SLR cameras, Nikon D-series of digital SLR cameras, and the Nikonos series of underwater cameras.

In 2006, Nikon announced that they would discontinue all but two of its film cameras (the low-end Cosina FM10 and the high-end Nikon F6) and would focus all other efforts on the digital camera market.

This Squidoo lens will give you an idea of what great Nikon cameras are available to you and what you can do with them. The possibilities are endless!

Nikon, Nikkormat, Nikonos, Nikkor..... Nikon Makes 'Em All...

Underwater photo taken with a 35mm film, 35mm lens, Nikonos II waterproof camera, Merizo Lagoon, GuamMy first exposure (excuse the pun) to Nikon photography was when I was in junior high school on the island of Guam--family friends were flying to Hong Kong and had volunteered to pick up a camera for me after I had mowed their lawn many times to earn the money.

What they brought home was a Nikonos II waterproof camera -- good for depths of up to about 140 feet. Now, I wasn't a SCUBA diver.... but I loved snorkeling on the island, so I finally had a chance to capture the underwater scenery I had been seeing every weekend on the coral reefs!

However, just because it was a "waterproof" camera didn't mean that I couldn't use it as a "regular camera" around school. I was a member of the school yearbook and newspaper staff--and used the camera during that first year to not only learn a lot about photography basics, but also got a lot of pictures for the yearbook and newspaper.

A Collection of Camera Experience! Nikon Makes Great Cameras!

Hallway view of George Washington Senior High School, Mangilao, Guam, shot with a 35mm Nikkormat camera with 50mm lens. After a year of using the Nikonos II camera around school, I wanted to get a single-lens-reflex camera to get more experience with my new love of photography.

After mowing more lawns, I scrounged up enough money to buy a Nikkormat SLR with a 50mm Nikkor lens and an 85-200mm zoom lens. This camera enabled me to get animal and scenic shots as well as better control over portraits and candid shots of my friends at school.

Higher-End Cameras - The F-Series!

Very Large Array Radio Telescope, near Datil, New Mexico, shot with a 35mm Nikon F1, with a Nikkor 85-250 zoom lens.During my senior year in high school, I acquired another Nikon gem--the Nikon F. This camera featured a larger (and interchangeable) viewfinder (great for getting shots at sports events!), range-finder focusing, built-in light meter, a shutter-delay-timer, and other goodies.

Unfortunately, I lost this one when someone broke into my car and stole all the contents (including the camera and all the other accessorites). After mowing more lawns and working as a rental-car agent, I managed to buy a Nikon F2 -- I used this camera for the next 25 years. It was the best camera I've ever used (it's now on display in a museum!). (I've graduated to digital!)

The PHD Guide to Photography With Disposable Cameras--This Squidoo lens is sort of my view on photography, why photography is so much fun, and some tips on how to make your photography better--even if you're using a disposable camera.

Darkrooms - Photography in the Dark Ages--This Squidoo lens describes the early processes that photographers used during previous decades to create their images after the image was captured in their camera--on film. It was in darkrooms that the images on the film came to life--where the film was developed and turned into transparencies (aka "slides") or into negatives from which prints could be exposed and developed. You can learn more about these "dark ages" here.

Digitizing Your Color Slides (or "transparencies")--If you've been involved with photography more than a few years, you may have accumulated many 35mm transparencies (aka "slides"). This Squidoo lens provides tips on how to make the digitization process more effective.
