David Letterman, Not Just the Late Show Host

Ranked #10,790 in Entertainment, #132,898 overall

David Letterman, Late Show Funnyman Plus

Dave Letterman is my favorite late night icon; my pick over all the others. Dave is the reason we stay up late enough to catch the monologue.

Dave got his start as a weatherman for station WTHR in Indianapolis where he first became notorious for offbeat one liners. Of note is the infamous weather broadcast in which he described a storm as having hail "the size of canned hams". His career was off to a good start.

Watching the "Late Show with David Letterman" is a tradition and will be strange without him when he decides to retire. Rumors say perhaps in a year or two but we hope he sticks around for a lot longer. Dave will leave some big shoes to fill.

Who Is Dave's Mom

David Michael Letterman was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Dorothy Hofert Letterman and Harry Joseph "Joe" Letterman on April 12, 1947. Joe Letterman died of a heart attack in 1973. Ten years later, Dorothy married Hans Mengering, a retired engineer.

Everybody loves Dave's Mom. Dorothy Mengering is a polite, sweet as apple pie lady with a dry wit and pleasant smile. She is a life long resident of Indiana and has appeared occasionally via satellite on the Late Show since 1994.

Dorothy is the focus of the "Guess Mom's Pies" segments. She recently recited the "Top Ten" on her 90th birthday appearance.

The dynamic between Letterman and his Mom have resulted in memorable Late Show moments.

David Letterman, Husband

Letterman's first marriage was to his college sweetheart, Michelle Cook. They were married from 1969 to 1977.

From 1978 to 1988 he was involved with Merrill Markoe, a talented writer for the Late Show.

He subsequently began dating Regina Lasko, also a Late Show staffer, in 1986 and after 23 years together, Letterman and Lasko finally tied the knot. The ceremony took place on March 19, 2009 at the Teton County Courthouse in Choteau, Montana.

In October of 2009 it was brought to light that Letterman had been involved in at least two affairs during his relationship with Lasko but prior to their marriage.

Robert Halderman, a TV producer and boyfriend of Stephanie Birkitt, a former Late Show employee, was charged with trying to extort $2 million from David Letterman by threatening to disclose information contained in Miss Birkitt's diary. The diary revealed details of an affair that she and Letterman had conducted. (Halderman eventually pleaded guilty to the charges and served 4 of his 6 month prison sentence.)

That same October Letterman made a public apology to his wife during taping of the Late Show. The question still remained as to whether or not Lasko, who was terribly hurt by her husband's scandalous behavior, would divorce Letterman.

After two years Letterman and Lasko are still together.

Stuck Truck Trivia

The day of the Letterman/Lasko marriage their truck got stuck in the mud on the way to the courthouse.

Regina and son Harry waited in the truck while Letterman walked 2 miles back to his Montana ranch to get another vehicle.

David Letterman, Dad

Harry Joseph Letterman was born November 3, 2003 to Letterman and Regina Lasko and was named after Letterman's father, Harry Joseph Letterman.

Harry is Letterman's pride and joy and has clearly has changed Letterman's life. After the birth of his son, Letterman became gentler and speaks softly and affectionately about his son on and off the show.

Letterman and his family maintain a private life style; as private as can be when one has reached such a high level of celebrity. Very few photos are available of his adorable son; the family prefers it that way.

David Letterman, Interviewer

Letterman is a great interviewer.

He asks fun questions, easy questions, and often asks hard questions of his guests. Often Dave's guests attempt to dodge his questions but it is rare that anyone refuses to answer him. In his relentless pursuit of answers, guests find themselves telling all on national television.

Letterman's clever manner and skills as an interviewer enable him to elicit all sorts of responses, serious, silly, or comical. He is a master at drawing belly laughs from the audience at the expense of his guests. No guest remains unscathed!

Late Show with David Letterman

Best Talk Show Host Ever

Critic Ken Tucker was quoted as saying that David Letterman is probably the best talk-show host ever . He feels a real connection to people."

After a checkered career as weatherman, game show host, TV announcer, radio show host, stand-up comic, and TV writer, Letterman went on to make frequent appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. This was followed by an unsuccessful attempt at hosting his own show.

"If at first you don't succeed". NBC decided to give Letterman another shot with "Late Night with David Letterman" . Bingo.

It seemed likely after a hugely successful decade of comedy and amassing of fans that Letterman would be the successor to Johnny Carson when he left The Tonight Show. The role went to Jay Leno.

In 1993 Letterman migrated over to CBS who gave him top billing in the same spot at 11:30 p.m. He has been entertaining audiences with tongue-in-cheek humor ever since.

Love Him or Leave Him? What Do You Think of Dave?

I'm not a fan or opponent since I hardly ever watch TV, but you sure put together a wonderful presentation! :)

He's a character--as aren't so many entertainers--and so many of us! Clever lens.

He is one hack of a personality. The only problem I have with his show is I don't have more time to see it more often. Thumbs up for Dave Letterman!

I still love Letterman though I don't watch as must as I used to. I like his humor.

    Love his mom.

I used to watch David Letterman a lot in the 90's, but then ended up watching Jay Leno for a while. Even though I lived in Indiana for 12 years, I never got remotely close to meeting him and can't recall an occasion when he came to South Bend. He is a funny guy and his interviews are definitely fun to watch. Nicely done, blessed.

Love David Letterman . . I watched it during the summers as a teen when he had a morning talk show . . I don't get to watch him as much now. I am very glad to hear he and Regina are still together. Harry is adorable (love Dave's mom too). I noticed he became more 'softened' on his show when Harry came along. Great lens!

What a cool lens! I like David Letterman but don't get to watch his show very often. You have some neat little tidbits of information here that make him seem more like a real person. Thanks!
