"It's such a sadness... that you think you've seen a film on your f*cking telephone. Get real." -- david lynch

David Lynch is an American flimmaker known for his juxtapositions of the ordinary and the fantastical.  He frequently makes movies where reality merges into dream states or the stories unfold in non-linear fashion.

ERASERHEAD

1977

Filmed over the course of a few years, and filmed all at night, ERASERHEAD was Lynch's directorial debut. It starred Jack Nance in the title character role, a man with a strange hairdo who feels trapped in his job, his marriage and fatherhood. Or it might be about a fetus-like baby born to a guy whose head is sampled for eraser making (a dream sequence from the movie depicts just this). The film has many abstract story elements as well as visuals that flow between real and imagined planes of existence. Long scenes sometimes have minimal or no dialog and much of the soundtrack is very specific audio sounds and effects designed by Lynch himself.

Classic Lynch Movies

When I use the term "classic" I'm referring to movies that display the distinctive quirks and style of David Lynch. One quality to note when watching a Lynch film is to make sure to be aware of the soundtrack. Lynch has always put a lot of attention into the sounds and music that occur in his movies. Long awkward silences or many minutes of subtle hissing or scratching sounds are often integral to enhancing the sense of the environments that the characters are inhabitng.
