David McCallum: The Real Reason I Watch NCIS

Ranked #902 in Entertainment, #10,634 overall

From Illya to Ducky

What do Illya Kuryakin and Dr Donald, "Ducky" Mallard have in common?
Who played the role of the Invisible Man in 1975?
Who was the main character in the very first Outer Limits Episode?
Who played with Charles Bronson in the Great Escape?
Who is the voice of C.A.R. on the Disney cartoon "The Replacements.?"

Only one answer matches all these questions. The actor who played all these roles, and more, is David McCallum, a Scottish born actor who now plays the suave and eccentric Ducky on the hit show NCIS.

When I first realized that David McCallum was a regular on NCIS, I was quickly hooked. I grew to love the show for itself, but David is the real reason I am an NCIS addict..

Lets find out why.

This Lens Was Selected as Lens of the Day

Oh Me, Oh My

Lens of the DayTis true, I am very proud to say that this lens was selected as Lens of the Day on Feb 5, 2010.

It is an indescribable feeling to receive that level of recognition. There are so many great lensmasters on Squidoo that I feel honored to be included among them. Many thanks to everyone who visits this lens and adds supportive comments. It is truly appreciated.

Who Is David McCallum?

Young David McCallumOne day I was riding the bus home when I mentioned to one of my "bus buddies" (people you get to know simply because you ride the bus together) that I was writing an article about David McCallum. He said he didn't know who he was. I then asked if he watched NCIS. No? Well, I imagine there are a few people who don't watch it.

So I asked him if he had ever heard of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. Since he is a fairly young man, compared to GrannySage anyway, he also said no.

This conversation convinced me that it was even more important for me to write this lens.

David McCallum was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1933. (What? He isn't Russian? Now you tell me).

His parents were both musicians. His mother was a cellist and his father played the violin. When David was young, the family moved to London where his parents played in the London Philharmonic Orchestra. David also exhibited musical talent and plays the oboe. It was thought he would follow in his parent's footsteps.

But David he decided that music wasn't for him, although he has several music albums on his list of credits. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the rest is history.

I don't mean to say that he immediately sky-rocketed to stardom. He started out in small roles, usually as troubled teenagers due to his James Dean-like appearance. He then graduated to larger roles and in 1965 he played Judas Iscariot in "The Greatest Story Ever Told." He also acted with Charles Bronson in 'The Great Escape," and they became good friends.

But it was when he came to America and landed the role of Illya Kuryakin in the series, "The Man from U.N.C.L.E" that David McCallum truly became a star.

Very High Tech

The show The Man from Uncle was very high tech in its day. Take a look at this short video. You'll see what I mean. The hidden door was so cool......but I mustn't give anything away!

The Man From What?

McCallum in UncleRecognizing that there are many people who have never heard of "The Man from U.N.C.L.E " is hard to accept, mainly because it shows my age. The show ran from 1964-1968, which means I was 12 years old at the time of the first show. Being a starry-eyed pre-teen, already in love with the Beatles, it was not surprising that I fell for the "blonde Beatle," aka David McCallum.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E was a spy show, a TV version of James Bond. The two main characters, played by David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin, and Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo, are secret agents for the agency known as the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement, shortened to U.N.C.L.E of course.

The main bad guys in the show usually worked for an organization called THRUSH whose only objective was to take over the world. Napoleon and Illya were involved in numerous capers to prevent them from reaching their objective. The most unusual aspect to Illya Kuryakin's character was that he was Russian. Because THRUSH was so diabolical, even countries with opposing ideologies worked together to stop them.

David McCallum has stated in several interviews that he was the one who created Illya's character, from the black turtleneck, the European accent, to the mystery surrounding his personal life.

"The character has not been explained very well in the series," David said, "so I've adopted him to my own character. He's very close to me."

David really did not enjoy being a teenage idol. Wherever he went he would be mobbed by hordes of screaming girls. One even pulled some hair out of his head. He stated he could never understand how people could endanger someone they professed to love.

"David Was Pretty Hot Back Then"

This video reviews the history of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and its incredible popularity. One of the women interviewed says that she tells her students to go home and say to their mothers, "Ilya Kuryakin." She states that they came back the next day and reported, "my mother screamed at me." Yes, for us teenyboppers, he was pretty hot! He was the Brad Pitt of my generation.

A Great Website About U.N.C.L.E.

U.N.C.L.E. IN RETROSPECT - Everything I Needed to Know About Life, I Learned from U.N.C.L.E.
I found this adorable website and it is worth a visit. It caught my attention because of the title of this article by C. W. Walker. It's one of those titles that when I saw it I thought, "I wish I had thought of it first." But the next best thing is to direct you to read it. Just don't forget to come back and see the rest of this lens.

Here is a teaser excerpt:

"U.N.C.L.E. taught us things, too. About the world, about life. For example, we learned:

* That friendship was good.

* That greed and dominating other people were bad."

For those nostalgia buffs who enjoy re-watching tv series. I don't really have the time to sit and watch the whole series again. But I would like to see 'Fifteen Years Later Affair." Somehow I missed it.

What Are They Saying About The Man From Uncle?

I discovered after being being awarded Lens of the Day for this lens that lots of people have fond memories of the TV show, The Man From Uncle. Here are some posts from across the web.
Best TV Feuds: From 'Batman' to 'The Good Wife'
THRUSH ("The Man From UNCLE," NBC, 1964-68): Week in and week out, secret agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin (Robert Vaughn, David McCallum) battled clever enemies working for an organization bent on world domination.
The “Men In Black” Franchise
The movie, written by Ed Solomon, adapting Lowell Cunningham's comic-book material, was a parody of old FBI pictures, as well as of ?Dragnet? and ?The Man From UNCLE? and also the paranormal-on-the-cheap TV thriller ?The X-Files,? a big hit at the time ...
An Artist of the TV Age

The Years In Between

David McCallum3The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was cancelled in 1968. But that was not the end of David McCallum's acting career. His credits are too numerous to cite completely, but here is a sample.

David appeared in several British TV series, including "Colditz", a series about prisoners of war and a science-fiction series "Sapphire & Steel." I recently watched an episode of "Sapphire and Steel" on You-Tube and found it very intriguing.

In 1975-76 he played Daniel Weston in the Invisible Man.

Other shows include guest appearances on Outer Limits, Perry Mason, Hart to Hart, the A-Team, Matlock, Murder She Wrote, Babylon 5, Sex and the City, Jag (which led to NCIS), and many, many more.

In 1994, David was the narrator for the documentaries "Titanic: Death of a Dream" and "Titanic: The Legend Lives On." He also narrated the TV special "Ancient Prophecies."

Since 2003 he has starred in the CBS television series NCIS as Dr Donald "Ducky" Mallard.

From 2006 he has also concurrently done the voice of C.A.R. on the Disney cartoon "The Replacements."

His movie credits are just as numerous and include:

# Around the World Under the Sea (1966)
# Three Bites of the Apple (1967)
# King Solomon's Treasure (1977)
# The Watcher in the Woods (1980)
# Terminal Choice (1985)
# The Haunting of Morella (1990)
# Batman: Gotham Knight as the voice of Alfred (2008)

This list is just a small sample to give some idea of the broad range of acting David has done. I refer you to Wikipedia for a complete listing.

Glimpes Into Other Roles

I tried to find a way to describe some of the many roles David has played over the years, but there is so much it would fill a book. So I offer you these short glimpses. I encourage you to take the time to watch them. Although quite different, there is always that element that is uniquely David McCallum. And I don't get tired of watching him.

In the first video, an overview of Sapphire and Steel, you will see David McCallum with a beard, something I don't think I've even seen before.

So Many Fun Ways to Show Your Love

David's Personal Life

David McCallumDavid has always kept his personal life very private. And I shall respect that desire and not dig too deeply. There are a few things that are public knowledge which I shall mention just to provide some background.

David was married to actress Jill Ireland for 10 years, from 1957 until their divorce in 1967. Together they had three children. One son died in 1985 from an accidental drug overdose. Jill re-married Charles Bronson, a long time family friend whom David met while filming "The Great Escape."

David then married Katherine Carpenter and they had two children. They are still married at the time of this writing and live in New York. He commutes to Los Angeles for the filming of NCIS.

His hobbies include golfing and computing.

In many of the interviews I read, David McCallum has been described as:
*intelligent and cultured
*imaginative and talented
*possessing style and grace
*a deep thinker who enjoys solitude
*earnest, introspective, and cool.

Kate: What did Ducky look like when he was younger?
Gibbs (smiling slightly): Illya Kuryakin.

And Then There is Ducky

David/NCISFinally we get to NCIS. As I've shown, David was not idle during the years between U.N.C.L.E. and NCIS. In fact, he definitely has earned the right to retire. But he loves to act, and to keep busy.

Since 2003, he took the role of Donald "Ducky" Mallard, the medical examiner. He stated that he did not know anything about the real NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) or about forensic pathology. So, as is typical for him when he takes on a new role, he devoted himself to learning all he could about it so that he can portray his character as realistically as possible. He has even watched full autopsies and calls a consulting pathologist regularly for tips on how to stand or hold his scalpel.

I've grown to love the other characters in the show as well, and enjoy the humor and side stories that have developed. But it is the character of Ducky, with his lovable idiosyncrasies, such as talking to the bodies on the autopsy table and going into long-winded reminisces about the past, who still has my heart.

Is Ducky Dead?

The season finale of NCIS was a cliff-hanger and leaves many wondering if Ducky is dead. Slipping on my super-sleuth cape I can put everyone's fears to rest. David McCallum has signed a two year contract for the show. So unless it is Ducky's ghost that is going to be appearing, then we are pretty certain it wasn't Ducky who died.

This was confirmed in an interview with executive producer Gary Glasberg on Inside TV

"David [Mccallum] and I have been talking about it for months, and he's been preparing for it. And he was absolutely 100 percent willing to play along, and we wanted to be very secretive about it and keep it under wraps, and it's really going to give his character a new perspective on life coming back from what he experienced. I'm not going to play games with people. People know he signed a new contract and he is coming back to see us, so it'll be more about the way the character evolves and the fact that he's got Palmer there to help him when he comes back. And as a medical examiner who deals with the dead, and deals with death on a daily basis, to have an experience like that is significant. And we'll play that throughout the season."
The link to the whole interview about the finale is below.

This is a very endearing lens. I can see why it won lens of the day. Congratulations!!!! NCIS is too gruesome for me....maybe I'm real fragile but I could tell from your title that you put your heart into this lens. Thank you for sharing with us who he is. That's cool you've kind of been following his career. I also love watching tv.

I just spotted this somewhere and came zooming over!!! Illya Kuriakin...the object of my 12 year old passion. along with George Harrison...oh simple days eh?
I am a bit hooked on NCIS...not it's big over here, so we are always well behind, and the episodes bounce around...director shepard is alive, is dead, is alive, Kate, Ziva, Kate again,Tim fat, Tim thin, Tim fat again...all a bit disorientating...but dear David remains a reliable constant.

In 1968, I was one of many teenage girls who were in love with Ilya Kuryakin. I watched NCIS for a long time before I realized who plays Ducky! David McCallum was definitely hot back in the day, and he's still a class act. Great lens!

As a teenager I was a big fan of U.N.C.L.E. I had posters of David McCallum and read about him in teen magazines.I now enjoy NCIS very much and was devasted as I watched Ducky collapse on the beach. That is what led me to your column. Thanks for easing my mind about Ducky. I am so glad he will still be on the show.

I didn't get to watch it as I am living in an RV currently parked in a national forest. But I noticed there was a flurry of activity on this lens so I did some snooping. I would have hated it if he died too. The official word from the producer is that he is coming back, see the link I posted above.

Thanks for this walk down memory lane. I used to watch UNCLE but I can't say that I was particularly enamoured of Ilya. He was funny-looking in my opinion. I never would have guessed that the good-looking Ducky is the same man as Ilya if you had not told me. (I still don't really see it.) Unfortunately, the show got too silly after awhile and I stopped watching it.

Just last night, my brother Don and I were watching a rerun of NCIS and got to talking about David McCallum. Don and I grew up in the 60s and remember McCallum from the The Man from U.N.C.L.E. We seem to remember that all of the ladies were crazy about him - that he was a bit of a sex symbol. I enjoyed your lens and am going to share it with my sister-in-law who is a huge NCIS fan. By the way, I see from your FB page that you live in Alabama. I do as well (Selma). All the best.

The GrannySage Award

While I was halfway through working on this lens, I started to wonder why I was doing it. What is so important about featuring an actor on a lens? Aren't there far more important issues to write about? Who is really going to care about it anyway?

I began to think about what it was I really liked about David McCallum. I admitted that as a teenager, David was my heart throb. But this is today, and yet I admire his work. I realized that he possesses a quality that is shared by some other celebrities I admire.

David is an actor who strives for quality in every project he undertakes. If he does not know anything about the topic, he will research it until he knows more than many people. He, like me, does not believe in mediocrity.

awardAs I write these final words, I am watching the Golden Globe Awards. I notice that neither NCIS nor any of the cast were nominated for an award. So I am giving the GrannySage Award of Excellence to David McCallum, for many years of artistic excellence (and for making my teenage heart go pitter-patter.)

I have also given this award to a dancer and a musician. Please take time to visit them as well.
